One of Donald Trump's core promises during the campaign was to "drain the swamp." In addition to cracking down on lobbyists, one major part of this plan is to implement term limits for Congressmen and Senators.
Though they were bitter rivals during the campaign, Ted Cruz has come forward and introduced a constitutional amendment to do just that. Senators would be limited to serving just two 6-year terms and Congressmen would have to retire after serving 6-years in total.
Congressman John Conyers is the longest serving member of the House of Representatives. He was elected back in 1965. Now, we are starting to learn that his almost 53-year career has been plagued by sexual assault claims. He just stepped down from his position as the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee because of sexual assault allegations made against him stretching back decades.
People like John Conyers are one of the reasons we need term limits.
But the primary reason is after spending decades in public office, these people have little-to-nothing to bring to the table. Chuck Schumer has been in Congress for more than 36 years. Nancy Pelosi has been in the House for 30+ years and McConnell has been in the Senate for almost 33 years.
Notice a pattern? The leadership is entirely made up of career politicians who have run out of good ideas decades ago...
Ted Cruz's Drain the Swamp amendment would clean them all out!
Serving in Congress is supposed to be about service. You get in, fix what you can, and get out to give someone else a chance. Seats in the House or Senate were never supposed to be lifetime appointments.
Anyone who stays in Congress for 30, 40, or even 50 years isn't serving their communities... They are serving themselves. When McConnell became a Senator, he was worth six figures. Today, he is worth upwards of 36 million.
Does that look like "service" to you? Go down the list and the stories are all the same.
It is time to pull the plug on career politicians and drain the swamp by imposing term limits.
That is what Ted Cruz’s amendment is all about: restoring the United States Congress to a service model, not one centered on personal-enrichment.
Mitch McConnell is blocking this amendment from moving forward. He has been blocking this resolution for weeks. But we are starting to see movement!
Now, more than ever, we need to bust through McConnell's blockade and FORCE Congress to debate and pass term limits!
All of the swampiest creatures in Congress are terrified. They are being exposed for decades of impropriety and crimes and still refusing to step down.
Ted Cruz's amendment would take that decision out of their hands entirely and return Congress to a place of service.
McConnell is terrified because he knows that term limits are one of the only things that cross party lines and have bipartisan support. He knows that this has a real possibility of passing, so he has locked the bill away.
Rise up and force a vote!
