It is with great pleasure that I inform you that a major gun rights bill has just been introduced in the United States Senate.
This is something that we have been pushing towards for months. The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act will revolutionize how the Second Amendment is applied throughout the country!
And it is all thanks to you! Together, we have blanketed Congress with literally over one hundred thousand faxes demanding that the right to BEAR arms be respected in all 50 states. And it worked. Yesterday, Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced this landmark gun rights bill.
The Supreme Court has already weighed in on this. When the Second Amendment mentions the right to “bear arms,” it is referring to individual citizens carrying arms for self-defense.
The phrase ‘bear arms’ has no other definition.
This bill would treat concealed weapons permits like driver’s licenses. If you get a driver’s license in Texas, for example, you aren’t just limited to driving in Texas. You can drive to any other state in the union. You are still required to obey each state’s laws, but it is understood that the basics of how to drive are the same in all fifty states.
That is how concealed weapons permits should be as well. The principles of self-defense are the same in Texas as they are in New York.
We got this far by nagging the hell out of Congress. But now isn’t the time to rest on our laurels. Now we MUST pressure every single member of Congress to support this common sense self defense legislation!
A lot of you will probably email us today and accuse us of trying to drag the U.S. back to a Wild West mentality. You will accuse us of wanting to give everyone a gun.
That couldn’t be farther from the truth.
This legislation would allow LICENSED concealed weapons permit holders to carry weapons nationwide, as opposed to just within their state of residence.
Back in 2004, under George W Bush, Congress passed the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA). This legislation allows trained and licensed retired police officers to carry a weapon nationwide.
Now, I personally think this was an excellent idea. Allowing retired law enforcement officers to stay armed while traveling the country only helps improve public safety.
But there is absolutely no reason that national reciprocity should be limited to just police officers.
Law abiding citizens are just as capable of defending themselves in public as law enforcement officers are. Data compiled by the Crime Prevention Research Center shows that as the number of carry permits increased over the past decade, the violent crime rate decreased.
In fact, you are three times more likely to be killed by a police officer than you are by a concealed carrier. That’s not an attack on police officer. Those are simply the facts.
Those Americans who choose to carry concealed weapons are literally some of the most law-abiding people in our society. They are trained and more than capable of protecting themselves and those around them.
But even though the Second Amendment says the right to bear arms shall not be infringed, that right only extends to the state line.
That has to stop. If you are licensed to carry a weapon in one state, then your permit should apply to every state. Criminals are going to carry weapons anyway. We MUST let law-abiding citizens exercise their Second Amendment rights when crossing state lines.
And when this bill is passed, it will force states like New Jersey and New York to allow their own citizens to carry.
