Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R?-WI) gave a press conference today. He was asked almost immediately about the Fix NICS bill, which is legislation to make sure that all state and local mental health and criminal records get added to the FBI's National Instant Check System (NICS).
Paul Ryan answered the reporter's question enthusiastically, saying that the Senate should follow the House's lead and pass the bill. The reporter then followed up and asked whether Paul Ryan would be willing to abandon the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act if necessary. Ryan said he would consider it.
In case you don't know, the House of Representatives passed a bill last year called the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. This bill has a really simple premise: when someone is licensed to carry a firearm in one state, they should be allowed to exercise their right to bear arms in all 50 states.
At the last minute, establishment Republicans added an amendment to the bill to update the FBI's background check system. It passed with a bipartisan majority in the House.
That bill is now collecting dust on Mitch McConnell's desk. President Trump demanded that Congress pass the Fix NICS bill, opening the door for concealed carry reciprocity to finally reach his desk.
Yet, like clockwork, Establishment Republicans are abandoning American gun owners. Mitch McConnell will not put the combination bill up for a vote and we now know that Paul Ryan won't force him to...
They are stabbing you in the back.
Every time there has been a mass shooting, the GOP has ran away from this bill. They are terrified of empowering Americans to defend themselves.
When Steve Scalise was shot, Congressional committees were supposed to start working on this bill. Paul Ryan stepped in and cancelled the hearing. He said the "timing wasn't right" to protect Americans' rights so soon after a shooting.
When a man opened fire on concert-goers in Las Vegas, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act was supposed to get a floor vote that week. Again, Paul Ryan declared that the "timing wasn't right" and shelved the bill.
With YOUR help, we bombarded Congress with more than 3 million FaxBlasts demanding that they hold the vote. Ryan relented and the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act passed with a bipartisan majority.
But now, he is back to his cowardly ways. He is going to let the GOP Senators separate the bills and leave the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act on the cutting room floor.
Time and time again, we hear from the Left that we Conservatives need to "compromise." Here we have a bill that would fix the background check system (which is what Democrats want) and restore the right to carry nationwide (which is what Conservatives want).
Yet, Democrats and establishment Republicans aren't interested in this "compromise." You see, they don't actually want "compromise." That would require a give-and-take. No, they're only interested in getting concessions from you.
The target is for Congress to put a bill on the President's desk by the end of the week. The GOP leadership has abandoned you. They are going to leave the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act out of the final bill.
Don't let that happen!
I'm going to level with you: we're up against the wall on this one.
We have fought tirelessly for concealed carry reciprocity for years. With your help, we took an obscure gun bill with no chances of passing and got it within one vote of reaching the President's desk.
We have never been closer to restoring the right to carry for all law-abiding Americans. Yes, I said all. The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would finally open the door for law-abiding Americans to carry firearms in anti-gun states like New Jersey and California.
And now that we are so close to victory, these spineless GOP traitors want to pull the rug out and undo all of this progress.
It really is now or never. If you want to see concealed carry reciprocity in your lifetime, now is the time to fight. Now is the time to draw your line in the sand and force Congressmen and Senators to restore the right to carry or else pack their bags.
Can we count on you? Will you please join this fight before it's too late?
It's now or never,
