As we warned, the Senate Judiciary Committee is moving forward with its hearing today on the biggest gun confiscation bill ever introduced in Congress.
This so-called Red Flag bill would allow police and prosecutors to suspend citizens' constitutional rights without even having to accuse them of breaking the law!
Federal law currently limits the reasons that the government can disarm civilians. Before a confiscation order is granted, the government must prove that a gun owner is (1) a criminal, (2) mentally defective, (3) a fugitive from justice, (4) someone dishonorably discharged from the military, (5) an illegal alien, (6) a domestic abuser, or (7) someone who has given up their US citizenship.
Each of these provisions requires the government to provide a court with proof that someone deserves to lose their 2nd Amendment rights and face disarmament.
But Red Flag laws add an 8th reason for disarmament: hearsay. Instead of producing hard evidence, prosecutors can use the word of an angry family member, friend, or neighbor to convince a judge that someone poses a danger to themselves or others.
They can't prove that someone is dangerous, but the Red Flag laws allow them to use this hearsay to get a "temporary" confiscation order.
These initial orders typically last a couple weeks.. During that time, the gun owner is allowed mount a legal defense. It's bad enough that the government would get the power to suspend your right to self defense for this long. But if disarmed gun owner cannot convince the Judge to believe them, then the confiscation order extends to one year.
Imagine that. Without being accused of a crime, gun owners can have their firearms taken away. And if they can't prove to a judge their innocent -- again, without even facing real criminal charges -- they can lose the right to keep and bear arms for up to a year. Forget innocent until proven guilty. This bill would make gun owners everywhere guilty until proven innocent.
This is unconstitutional. And now, the GOP is holding a hearing in the Judiciary Committee to rush the bill through.
This is happening today! You must stop it!
Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is bringing in "experts" to support Red Flag laws. The next step is to rush Senate Bill 7, the Extreme Risk Protection Order and Violence Prevention Act, through committee.
The media is solely focused on the Mueller Report and its aftermath right now. That is all any of the newspapers and news shows are covering. The GOP establishment knows this is their best shot to ram this bill through without waking up America's gun owners.
The only way they win is if they catch you off guard...
But now you know what is happening!
This bill is, perhaps, more dangerous than any other anti-gun bill being proposed in Congress. It would give vengeful and spiteful spouses, exes, family members, and neighbors the power to disarm gun owners. We are already seeing this new power being weaponized in states like Maryland and Florida.
And now, the Republican leadership wants to make this a nationwide policy.
Not on our watch...
The committee hearing is happening today. Then, they will hold a vote on Senate Bill 7 to try to push it through.
We are running out of time. You need to fight back right now and KILL this horrible gun confiscation bill before it's too late!
