Today is the deadline for Congress to come up with a homeland security funding bill in order to keep the government open.
For the past two weeks, Republicans and Democrats have been meeting behind closed doors and negotiating. Yesterday, we learned that they have come to agreement on most of the terms, except for two: border wall funding and funding for beds in detention centers.
There is a reason that Democrats are trying to block funding to these two programs. If they stop the border wall from getting built, then illegal aliens will be able to continue streaming into the country.
And if the Left pulls the funding from Homeland Security's detention facilities, then Border Patrol and ICE will be forced to go back to Obama's catch-and-release program because there won't be enough beds for detained illegal aliens.
If the Democrats get their way on this, all four thousand members of the caravan would be able to walk across the border and Border Patrol would have to let them go...
This is the left's end goal and Republicans are going to give it to them!
Yesterday, Mitch McConnell told the Republicans in the Conference that he wanted negotiators to strike a deal with Democrats, even if that meant agreeing to a bill that President Trump refuses to sign. Instead of supporting the President's border wall demand, McConnell is now leaving the President out to dry.
This came on the heels of another McConnell threat to block President Trump if he tries to approve the border wall on his own by declaring a national emergency.
The Congressional GOP is done fighting for the wall. They put on a good show for a couple of months, but now they are ready to move onto other issues, even if that means surrendering to the Democrats!
The Left is also trying to sneak in two poison-pill amendments: the first would limit border wall construction to simply repairing existing fencing. The other -- written by Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX) would prohibit Trump from constructing a border wall anywhere "rough terrain, natural barriers, and the remoteness of a location render a wall or other structure impractical or ineffective."
These two amendments would absolutely kill the border wall project, even if Congress was to approve some funding!
The conference must release a spending bill today in order for Congress to fund the Department of Homeland Security before the deadline next week (and avoid another government shutdown).
We're running out of time to stop the GOP from surrendering on the wall!
Now I know what you're saying: if Congress doesn't fund the wall, Trump can go it alone. That's correct. The President has the statutory authority to use discretionary funding for national security construction projects. But Republicans are also working with Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) to push through an amendment prohibiting the Army Corps of Engineers from ever working on the border wall!
We are looking at a true worst case scenario here. Not only is the GOP preparing to give up on ever building the border wall, but they are working with Democrats to block Trump from securing the border on his own!
And apparently, they have the votes...
This isn't just a fight over a wall. This is a fight over the future of our Republic. We will either be a country of laws and borders, or we will not. What happens today will decide our future.
This is the GOP establishment's last stand. They know that if they can block the border wall one more time, it will never get built.
You CANNOT let the GOP get away with this betrayal!
Don't let them surrender!
