A week and a half ago, gun control organizations, the NRA, and Congressional leadership were racing towards a gun control compromise following the Las Vegas shooting. Every day, more and more Republicans came out in support of a gun ban.
We didn't stop fighting. We told anyone who would listen about how dangerous this ban was. You didn't stop fighting. You got so loud that it was impossible for Congress to ignore you. Together, we made this happen.
While Paul Ryan said just over a week ago that he was open to holding a vote on a gun control bill, he has now been scared straight. He will not be scheduling a vote on Diane Feinstein's gun ban legislation! This proves what we have said all along: you have the power to change the course of history.
You have the power to save this Republic!
The entire GOP leadership was behind a ban bill and it would have had enough votes to pass. Now, they can't run away from Feinstein's legislation fast enough. But just because they are afraid to pass gun control doesn't mean that they are moving forward with all of the pro-gun bills collecting dust in Congress. Ryan and Co. still say that the "timing isn't right" to pass pro-gun reforms.
There were two bills that were supposed to get a vote this month: the Sportsman's Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act was supposed to get a vote in early October and the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act was originally scheduled for this coming week. Both have been pulled.
You answered the call and protected the 2nd Amendment from Diane Feinstein's latest gun ban legislation. You put fear back into these Republicans and even the NRA itself, forcing both to back away from passing this ban bill.
Now it is time to force them to move the ball forward and pass these common-sense 2nd Amendment bills!
The SHARE Act would not only undo many of the lasting anti-gun and anti-ammunition regulations left over from the Obama years, but it would ensure that future President can never go after your rights by targeting ammunition. It would also de-regulate firearm suppressors, allowing you to purchase one by passing an instant background check at the store instead of waiting 10 months for the ATF to get around to it. If this was put to a vote today, it would pass.
The other legislation is the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. This legislation would make it so that if you are allowed to carry a concealed firearm in one state, you would be allowed to carry in all 50 states. That includes nationwide reciprocity for people who live in permitless or constitutional carry states, as well as Americans who only possess non-resident carry permits because they live in a gun control state. We are proud to report that this bill is still picking up support and by our count, has enough support to pass.
It is time to go on offense. It is time to pass real reform legislation to ensure that our rights are protected and preserved not just for us, but also for future generations to come!
Using our proprietary FaxBlast system, we all were able to bury Congress in close to three quarters of a mil lion faxes in just the past half month alone demanding that they kill Dianne Feinstein's latest gun control push. Even when the House version of the bill was introduced by Republican Carlos Curbelo and 9 other Republican Congressmen signed on, you didn't give up. You kept fighting.
We just faced down the biggest threat to our rights that we've seen in years and we won.
But now is not the time to rest on these laurels. Now is not the time to settle for being able to defend the status quo.
It is time to go on offense. These two bills are common-sense, have the backing of every single gun rights organization, and have enough support to pass. Yet, a handful of liberal Republicans in the Congressional leadership are blocking both pieces of legislation from receiving the vote that they have earned.
It is not enough to just protect what we already have. This is a once in a lifetime to expand the 2nd Amendment and preserve it for generations to come!
No more waiting,
Joe Otto
