The clock is ticking. Congress now has a little over a week and a half to put the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act onto President Trump's desk before it becomes even harder to do so.
The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act basically says that if you have a license to carry a firearm that is issued by a state (including non-resident permits), you can use that license to carry in every state.
Doug Jones' win in Alabama means that after Christmas, there will be one less Republican in the Senate. That means that instead of needing to get eight Democrats to sign onto the bill, it will take nine of them to pass it.
Democrat Senators have to defend seats next year in Indiana, Missouri, West Virginia, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Florida, and Pennsylvania. All pro-gun states that Trump won in 2016. These are eight currently democratic seats that can be pressured into voting for this common sense pro-gun legislation.
Does anyone really think that a Democrat can win in North Dakota or West Virginia if they vote against the 2nd Amendment? Of course not.
But the GOP isn't scrambling to force a vote on this because the leadership doesn't think it should be a priority.
This isn't just about giving people the right to carry outside of their home state. This legislation would tear down unconstitutional gun laws in eight states that have violated their residents' right to bear arms for more than a century.
Law-abiding Americans living in states like New Jersey, Maryland, California, or New York cannot be approved for a license to carry a firearm. I used to live in New Jersey. In order to be approved to exercise your right to bear arms, you need to prove you have a "justifiable need" to defend yourself in public. They have made it impossible to prove.
The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would allow people who live behind what I call the 'Gun Control Iron Curtain -- states that have de facto bans on concealed carry -- to use a non-resident permit issued by Utah or Florida to carry not just nationwide, but in their home state as well.
That's right. Even if Massachusetts, for example, refuses to issue carry permits to its law-abiding residents, those same applicants would be able to drive into New Hampshire, get a non-resident carry permit, and then use that to carry in Massachusetts. And there would be nothing that the liberal anti-gun state politicians could do about it.
Right now, more than 25% of Americans live in states that refuse to obey and honor the 2nd Amendment's right to bear arms. We are talking about 80+ million people. These are law abiding Americans who have gone their entire lives without the right to bear arms in public for self defense. The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act puts an end to this injustice once and for all.
The bill passed the House. Now it has joined the other 300+ bills that the House passed this year, but Mitch McConnell refuses to hold a vote for.
Paul Ryan is saying he did his job and refuses to attach the carry bill to the next round of must-pass spending bills. Mitch McConnell says there's no time to pass this bill and it will simply have to wait. Neither one wants to do what is necessary to put this massive pro-gun bill onto President Trump's desk.
This started out as just a pipe dream. Since 2013, we have bombarded Congress with FaxBlasts on an almost weekly basis demanding that they pass this bill to restore the 2nd Amendment's promise of a right to bear arms.
It took us -- and I really mean us -- four years, but the legislation has finally passed in the House of Representatives. The GOP leadership wants that to be good enough. They want to be able to say they did something without actually accomplishing anything. They think that doing half the work will be enough to quiet us down.
Not by a long shot.
We have gotten this far. We have taken a dream and gotten it this close to becoming a reality. The finish line is in sight.
Don't let the GOP get away with letting this legislation die!
