Breaking: President Trump just forced Paul Ryan to pass border wall funding, but the GOP is already talking about reversing course and giving up!
Two days ago, the Republican leadership claimed they didn't even have the votes in the House to pass a border wall funding bill. Paul Ryan told President Trump that he was just going to need to accept open borders.
The GOP thought they had won and started sending their Congressmen and Senators home. Nancy Pelosi was seen singing and drinking in celebration at a DC bar. The establishments of both parties thought they had successfully blocked the border wall forever.
Then, yesterday morning, President Trump punched back. He dragged the GOP leadership into the Oval Office and told them to their faces that he would veto any spending bill that did not include full border wall funding.
Paul Ryan left the White House looking like he had seen a ghost. After scrambling yesterday afternoon and evening, the House passed approved legislation approving 5.7 billion in border wall funding.
But the fight isn't over. The legislation still needs to pass the Senate and Paul Ryan can still abandon the plan entirely if McConnell refuses to push it through.
We have never been this close to victory. We are just 24 hours away from finally securing the border. President Trump is using all of his power and leverage to force the GOP to finish this, but he needs your help now more than ever!
This morning, President Trump demanded that Mitch McConnell 'go nuclear' in order to secure border wall funding.
Currently, the Senate requires 60 votes to end debate on any piece of legislation. Since the GOP only holds 51 seats, that means they need 9 Democrats to support "cloture" for the wall vote to move forward. If they don't hit 60, then the debate over the legislation never technically ends, ultimately killing the proposal.
But this 60 vote threshold isn't written in law or the constitution. It is simply written in the Senate rules. That means it can be changed in a heartbeat.
McConnell did just that last year when Democrats threatened to block Neil Gorsuch's Supreme Court confirmation. Democrats went nuclear back when Republicans were blocking Obama's lower court nominees.
Right now, Democrats are blocking border security and demanding that we keep the border wide open. So why wouldn't we go nuclear now too?
President Trump decided to oppose the GOP's plan because of the backlash he received from conservatives. People like you forced Trump to return to his promises and stick to his guns.
Now, he needs your help putting maximum pressure on Congress.
It is up to YOU to force the Senate to approve the full border wall funding, by any means necessary. It is up to YOU to force the House to hold the line and stop Paul Ryan from backing down the minute things get tough.
