2nd Amendment issues haven't been front and center in the Trump administration, but there are a lot of good things happening behind the scenes that will make it harder for gun control advocates to attack our rights in the future.
The Trump administration just removed the term "assault weapon" from practically the entire Federal register. This is a big deal.
Stretching back all the way to the Clinton administration, gun grabbers have tried to hide restrictive gun control laws inside of Federal regulations. One key example is in firearm export regulations.
Not a single country on earth uses a semi-automatic rifle as their standard issue military weapon. Yet, the Clinton administration declared that semi-automatic rifles were "weapons of war" and could not be exported. That had disastrous consequences. Even though the regulation was just dealing with exports, activist judges seized on it and used the regulation to justify state-level gun bans. Since the Federal government defined these guns as "weapons of war," judges reasoned that states should be allowed to ban them. While it may sound like these were just obscure import/export regulations, they resulted in tens of millions of Americans having their rights violated.
But the Obama administration took that one step further. They declared that even a firearm design was a "weapon of war." They shut down companies that posted gun designs online, grossly violating their First and Second Amendment rights in the process. Trump is trying to tear all that down. His administration has removed the term "assault weapon" from these regulations and just declared that semi-automatic weapons are civilian guns, not military weapons. This is huge.
Not surprisingly, Democrats are furious. They've spent decades building up these anti-gun regulations and Trump has torn them all apart in a little over a year and a half.
But they aren't defeated yet. There are -- right now -- two dozen Republican Congressmen who are itching to get these so-called assault weapon regulations reinstated. If they get just one more Republican on their side, they can shut President Trump down!
The process is known as the Congressional Review Act (CRA). This is the law that allows Congress to reverse Executive branch regulations, as long as they have a simple majority of Congressmen and Senators.
Since Trump took office, it has been used 16 times to overturn Obama-era regulations. But already, we are seeing Leftists starting to use the mechanism to stop Trump from taking action.
Just last month, the Senate held a CRA vote to reinstate Obama's net neutrality regulations. The vote passed because Republicans teamed up with the Left. Now, the vote is going to move to the House, where Democrats are scrambling to get the GOP votes.
The point is that the Left is succeeding. They are challenging the Trump administration's new regulations and convincing Republicans to join them.
We've been keeping track of the GOP surrenders and right now, we see two-dozen House Republicans eager to pass a new gun ban. Rep. Francis Rooney (R-FL) infamously declared a few weeks ago that Americans would need to start losing some of their Constitutional rights.
They don't have the votes for a new nationwide gun ban, but they are awfully close. But they do have the votes for is to restore these Clinton- and Obama-era anti-gun regulations.
Make no mistake: this isn't about some obscure export regulations. This is a fight over whether Americans should even be allowed to own firearms or not.
And it is a fight we cannot afford to lose!
Good things are happening behind the scenes. But Trump's actions aren't being kept secret. Gun control advocates see what he is doing and are mobilizing everything they have to stop him. They are putting tremendous pressure on Democrat and RINO lawmakers to stop Trump from succeeding.
And they are close to winning.
We don't enjoy reading through all of the updates to the Federal register. But we read every single update because even just a slight edit can have disastrous consequences. During the Obama years, the Left tried to hide gun and ammunition bans deep inside the Federal register.
But under Trump, those heinous regulations are being overturned. The big one? Removing the term "assault weapon" from the registry entirely.
That is what we're talking about here. Solidifying that Americans have a right to own firearms.
Cowardly Republicans are already jumping at a chance to show Democrat voters that they're for gun control.
I am often reminded by a famous Ronald Reagan quote: Freedom is never more than a generation away from extinction. For all of our successes, we are just a handful of votes away from losing it entirely.
