The 2nd Amendment reads that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Over the years, Congress and the Courts have invented exceptions to this very basic rule.
For a over a half century, criminals have been blocked from buying or owning guns. Gun crime persists because criminals, by definition, ignore the laws. Criminals don't care that it is against the law to steal a gun. They don't care that it's illegal for convicted felons to buy weapons on the black market.
Instead of recognizing that gun control doesn't work, Leftists double down. They believe that the reason their gun control laws don't work is because they don't go far enough...
Today's Congress is on the verge of expanding this country's gun control laws to disarm millions, and even tens of millions of innocent Americans.
This isn't an exaggeration. Even if Democrats don't get the gun control bills they truly want, like an assault weapons ban, the other proposals they're pushing would still disarm tens millions of Americans.
The bulk of it would come from a bill that Nancy Pelosi just announced. Under the Left's new bill, all Americans between 18 and 21 years old would instantly lose their 2nd Amendment rights. Not because they committed a crime, but simply because they are too young, in Democrats' eyes.
But Pelosi isn't stopping there. The Left is also moving to reinstate Barack Obama's Social Security gun ban. Under Obama the plan -- which Trump terminated -- Social Security beneficiaries would have lost their gun rights simply for having a 'designated payee' assigned to them. This is a family member or friend who is approved by the Social Security Administration to help handle a beneficiary's affairs. Family members do this so that they can deposit a beneficiary's checks or be allowed to pick up their medications from the pharmacy. The Left says that if a Social Security beneficiary needs help managing their affairs, they should lose their gun rights.
So it's not just the young. Democrats are also trying to disarm seniors too. And then they have Lindsey Graham's Red Flag bill to help them disarm the rest. Graham's bill would use Federal funds to help all 50 states create their own gun confiscation programs. Instead of disarming criminals and the mentally ill, this bill would allow police to disarm innocent Americans without even accusing them of breaking the law. It would then be up to the disarmed gun owner to prove to a judge that they deserve their rights back. If they can't then they lose their guns for a whole year. This isn't innocent until proven guilty... It is exactly the opposite!
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the radical Left also has an amendment of their own that would allow the Federal government to disarm people who commit non-violent misdemeanors like harassment or stalking. For the first time, the government would be allowed to permanently suspend someone's 2nd Amendment right for committing a non-violent crime.
This is all coming down the pike right now and there is a reason that Leftists are taking this approach.
Republicans have already agreed to negotiate with the Left over a new gun control bill. Democrats are taking a play right out of Trump's Art of the Deal. They are coming in demanding total gun bans and are trying to pressure the GOP into only disarming millions or tens of millions of Americans.
That is what it means when you hear Republicans talk about "compromising" or "finding middle ground" on gun control.
They are selling you out!
The Left is smart. They know they will never get away with passing a total gun ban. So, they're chipping away at the 2nd Amendment bit by bit.
This is the biggest threat to the 2nd Amendment we have seen in decades. And Republicans are lining up to "negotiate" over how many innocent Americans would have to lose their gun rights.
