The Republican establishment continues to block the biggest pro-gun bill in American history: the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act.
During the NRA's yearly convention, GOP leaders promised to hold a vote on the historic bill before the August recess. Not only is this a push to make concealed carry reciprocity the law of the land, but it would force red state Democrats to go on record on the 2nd Amendment just weeks before election day.
For example, there are 10 Senate Democrats up for re-election in states that Donald Trump won (most of which, he won by 10%+). All of these states allow concealed carry.
There is no chance that Heidi Heitkamp, for example, would be able to win re-election in North Dakota if she votes against the right to bear arms. Same goes for Joe Manchin in West Virginia, Claire McCaskill in Missouri, Jon Tester in Montana... you get the picture.
If all of these vulnerable Democrats vote for the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, along with the Republicans, then it will pass. If they vote against Americans' right to bear arms, then it will be that much easier to remove them from office.
This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. Had Hillary Clinton won, we would be facing gun control and gun bans everywhere we turn. But Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to sign reciprocity into law. Now, we just need to force Congress to put it on his desk!
The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act is simple. If you are licensed or permitted to carry a concealed weapon in one state, then you would be allowed to carry in all states. Period.
This bill would basically require that states treat out-of-state gun permits the same way they treat out-of-state driver's licenses.
If you want to drive across the country, you don't need to take a driving test in every state you drive through. That would be total chaos. Instead, states honor driver's licenses issued by other states. Drivers still need to know and obey the traffic laws in each state they drive in, but they aren't forced to get multiple licenses to drive across the country.
Driving is a privilege. Bearing arms is a right. It's time that states are required to treat it as such.
Right now, 26% of Americans live in states that refuse to issue concealed carry permits to their residents. These are known as "may issue" states, meaning that if you apply, the state government only "may issue" you a carry permit. In practice, these states reject almost all carry permit applications.
Many of these states also refuse to honor any out-of-state permits. Illinois used to reject all carry permit applications. The Appeals Court stepped in and ruled their carry ban was unconstitutional. While Illinois residents are now allowed to concealed carry, the state still refuses to honor any out-of-state carry permit. The same is true, weirdly enough, with South Carolina.
The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would change all of that for good!
The House of Representatives passed a watered down version of bill last year, but Paul Ryan ended up ripping it up and passing more gun control instead. Mitch McConnell has refused to hold a vote on this for the past year and a half.
Gun rights groups from across the country are joining forces to get this bill passed. We need your help!
We pressured the House into voting on this bill last year, but at the last minute, GOP leaders caved and added new gun control measures to the package. When it came time to pass a budget, Paul Ryan left the concealed carry portion on the cutting room floor and only added the new gun control to the omnibus bill.
He stabbed us in the back. The whole GOP leadership did.
Now, it is time to fight back. This bill can pass if the leadership just schedules a vote.
We need to pressure ALL members of Congress, Republican and Democrat, to get behind this. Anyone who refuses will be removed from office.
This is an opportunity -- right now -- not only to make nationwide reciprocity a reality, but to tear down the gun control iron curtain that has kept 26% of Americans disarmed for over a century.
Not only is this the biggest pro-gun bill ever, but it is the biggest civil rights bill of my lifetime.
This is our moment, our chance to restore the 2nd Amendment and the right to bear arms.
Please don't let these turncoats abandon the American people!
