This is not a joke. Democrats are currently teaming up with Republican Congressmen to pass gun confiscation legislation!
Michigan Representatives Debbie Dingell (D) and Fred Upton (R) -- shown above -- held a "listening session" this week with students and teachers to come up with a new gun control proposal.
They left that meeting committed to pushing their confiscation plan through. If Fred Upton's name rings a bell, he has also signed on to the Left's assault weapon ban as well.
Right now, a number of states have laws on the books allowing local law enforcement to take guns away from anyone deemed to be a threat to themselves or others. Upton and Dingell want to make this a national law.
That's right, they want to give the Federal government the power to confiscate Americans' guns without ever charging them with a crime!
It is not supposed to be easy for the Federal government to disarm citizens. There are only a few justifications that the Feds can use to disarm someone: a dishonorable discharge, being a fugitive from justice, a mental illness adjudication, or a criminal conviction.
Gun grabbers want to add another way for the Federal government to violate the 2nd Amendment.
This new proposal would let friends, family members, co-workers, community members, or complete strangers report someone to the Federal government. The Feds would then use that hearsay to disarm the target.
The gun owner would then need to go before a judge and prove that he or she deserves their right to keep and bear arms. The government wouldn't be forced to charge the person with a crime or get them admitted to a mental institution. They would be able to get a disarmament order with no evidence whatsoever.
I've told this story before, but I have a Great Uncle who went through a really bitter divorce a couple of decades ago. He was an avid hunter and had a pricey collection of guns. His ex wife wanted to stick it to him in the divorce, so she went to the police and told them she was worried her husband was dangerous. In New Jersey, that was enough for the local police to confiscate the guns.
During the divorce, the judge refused to give the guns back to my Great Uncle, even though they were rightfully his and many were owned before he even got married. Since his spiteful ex-wife got a restraining order against him, the judge gave the guns to her in the settlement. She spitefully sold them off.
I don't care what good a "red flag" law like this would do. The Federal government has no business disarming Americans and certainly not without criminal charges.
This legislation is a game changer. It would open the flood gates for Federal disarmament orders. Once that happens, there's no coming back.
Republicans are already coming on board with this gun confiscation plan. If we're going to stop this, it has to be now!
Don't think that the Establishment GOP will stop this. They are still itching to "do something" on guns.
With Paul Ryan's announcement today that he will not seek re-election, the GOP is scrambling to move to the left. They think that will save them in November.
Ryan and Co. already pushed through a bill that expanded the background check system and gun owners got nothing in return. If gun confiscations become federal law, then there's no coming back.
I am calling on all Constitutional Conservatives to join the fight to push back against this madness.
Giving the government gun confiscation powers is a mistake a free people only get to make once...
