Back in April, Mitch McConnell issued a promise: He would hold a vote on the biggest gun rights bill in history — the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act — before the midterm elections. It was a simple plan. Republicans get a chance to fulfill a promise and vulnerable Democrats would be forced to go on the record on the 2nd Amendment. Does anyone think that a Democrat in Montana or West Virginia could win by voting against the right to bear arms?
Well, McConnell lied.
He is refusing to hold the vote and letting Democrats off without having to go on the record with the 2nd Amendment. But the GOP is going to hold a vote immediately after the midterm elections. Except instead of expanding your gun rights, they want to give the government more powers to disarm innocent Americans!
Democrats are promising major gun control if they retake Congress. We're talking assault weapon bans, magazine restrictions, and a universal gun owner registry.
Republicans see this and are itching to "compromise" in order to get the Left off of the gun control issue.
Except this isn't really a compromise. Compromises involve a give-and-take. This plan involves nothing but taking. The compromise, in the eyes of establishment Republicans and their gun control Democrat allies, is that they're only going to confiscate some guns and not all of them…
It's called a "red flag" policy. Right now, under US law, there are only a handful of ways the government can confiscate someone's guns and suspend their 2nd Amendment rights. Most of them involve charging them with a crime or having them adjudicated mentally defective. But it's also possible for someone to lose their gun rights if they are dishonorably discharged from the military, flee justice, or lose their immigration status.
The point is, it isn't easy for the government to take away someone's guns and that is by design. If it was, then it wouldn't be a right.
But under the GOP's new plan, state and local governments would be allowed to disarm gun owners based on nothing but hearsay. If a family member, friend, or even complete stranger turns a gun owner into police, a judge would immediately have the ability to suspend their gun rights. It would be up to the gun owner to then prove their innocence.
This is why this proposal is so dangerous. Right now, in order for someone to be disarmed, the government has to first prove someone is guilty or insane. This principle — innocent until proven guilty — is the cornerstone of our judicial system. But under the proposal being pushed by Reps. Ryan Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and John Katko (R-NY), this concept would be completely turned upside-down.
Instead of being innocent until proven guilty, gun owners would instantly become guilty until proven innocent!
For months, vulnerable Republicans have been campaigning on a promise to pass this gun control bill. One Congressman in Florida — Francis Rooney — has been saying that "some freedoms are going to have to be given up."
With the midterms now just a couple days away, the GOP is about ready to execute their plan. Win or lose, they're moving forward with their gun control plans.
Democrats are promising horrible gun control legislation if they retake Congress. Instead of fighting, the GOP is caving and giving the Left some of what they want.
But they want to open the door for nationwide gun confiscations in the process, all in the hopes of being able to hold onto political power for a little bit longer…
Fight back now before it's too late!
