Fellow Conservative,
Late last week, a Federal Judge in Virginia upheld President Trump’s travel ban as being constitutional. This ruling has created what is known as a circuit split in the courts. The case is now on the fast track to the Supreme Court because different judges across the country reached different conclusions.
It is now more important than ever for Neil Gorsuch to be confirmed as soon as possible.
The Democrats know this. They know that if they can delay the confirmation, they can kill Trump’s travel ban.
So, Chuck Schumer announced that the Democrats will filibuster Gorsuch’s confirmation. Even Colorado Senator Michael Bennett, who introduced Gorsuch at his hearing, is expected to vote against him.
It takes 8 Democrats to confirm a Supreme Court nominee under the current rules. If the Democrats filibuster, they will be able to keep the seat on the court vacant and defeat Trump’s refugee executive order.
The stakes have never been higher.
Mitch McConnell is dancing around the issue.
It currently takes 60 votes in the Senate to confirm a Supreme Court nominee. McConnell has the power and the votes to change the rules in the Senate – the so-called “nuclear option” – to allow Gorsuch to be confirmed with a simple majority. But McConnell doesn’t want to.
He wants to give the Left a chance, even though the Democrats are promising to filibuster it.
GOP leadership doesn’t care how much time they waste. They don’t care about Trump’s refugee ban being shot down by a 4-4 tie in the Supreme Court.
Because a Federal Judge ruled in favor of the ban, it will go to the Supreme Court. And the President is requesting that the appeal process be expedited.
We’re down to the wire here. The Democrats have shown their hand. They are going to filibuster Neil Gorsuch.
It’s time to use the nuclear option and put Judge Gorsuch on the bench!
The refugee ban isn’t the only case making its way to the Supreme Court soon. Challenges to bans on so-called “assault weapons,” the President’s crackdown on sanctuary cities, and the White House’s regulatory changes are all being argued in the courts.
We cannot allow these cases to be heard by a liberal Supreme Court.
The time is now. No more delays.
Fight on,
Joe Otto
