It has been 138 days (about four and a half months) since President Trump was inaugurated. What has Congress accomplished?
Sure, they've rolled back a number of Obama's executive orders using Congressional Review Act resolutions. But have they passed any major pieces of legislation?
The answer is no.
For years, Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have talked about how they would 'take this country back' as soon as the voters gave them a Republican President. The fact of the matter is they haven't taken anything back. They co-opted the conservative and tea party movements in order to hold onto power and now that they actually have a chance to take action, they're silent.
They would rather take vacations than do what the American people elected the to do... what they promised to accomplish.
No border wall, no refugee shutdown, no healthcare reform, no tax reform, no defunding of the United Nations, no concealed carry reciprocity... The list literally goes on and on.
President Trump demanded this past week that Congree get to work and start passing legislation. If that requires changing the rules, so be it. Do you know what Mitch McConnell said? No.
The question you need to ask yourself is whether you voted for this. Did you vote for inaction? Did you vote to leave Obama's policies in place and allow activist judges to block conservative reforms?
If the answer to that is "no," then there's only one option...
Did you know that the Speaker of the House can be anyone? It doesn't have to be a Senator. The House of Representatives can literally pick anyone in the country and they instead chose to pick Paul Ryan. Mitch McConnell is at least trying. But he doesn't have the strength in the party to demand action and having been in office since 1984, what new ideas could he possibly have?
The President made his demands. Congress must start passing agenda items by any means necessary. That includes using the nuclear option if need be. But McConnell refuses to. He's been in the Senate so long, he's grown attached to the arcane rules that stop legislation from reaching the President's desk.
The Democrats have promised that they will block every single piece of President Trump's agenda, even the items like infrastructure that they agree with. They are so consumed by Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS), that they just refuse to let him accomplish anything. We saw that on display with the Supreme Court confirmation. There, Mitch McConnell invoked the nuclear option to get Gorsuch onto the bench. Now that we see the same obstruction with legislation, McConnell has changed his mind about winning by any means necessary...
I am sure that Ryan, McConnell, and the rest of the GOP leadership are good individuals. Unfortunately, they are just not good at being Congressional leaders.
We only get one shot at this. We've worked tirelessly over the last eight years to be in this position to undo what Barack Obama and the Democrats did to this country. Now that we're in this position, the party leadership refuses to act.
If the next four years go the same way the last four and a half months have, we will have squandered the best opportunity we have ever had to make America great again.
I refuse to go down this path of inaction any longer. I'm taking a stand.
Will you?
