Spend a few minutes reading about the Benghazi scandal, and you’ll see that there is something not quite right. But if you have spent over a year learning about the Benghazi scandal, it becomes clear as day that there is a very serious cover-up taking place.
We know that Barack Obama was asleep on his way to a fundraiser as four brave Americans perished in Benghazi, Libya. We know someone gave the stand down order to leave them to die. We know that when Susan Rice went out to speak on all of the news channels, she delivered a well-crafted lie that blamed the attack on a YouTube video instead of Obama’s abysmal foreign policy.
We know all of these things, deep down in our guts. But that won’t get us a conviction and it is going to be incredibly hard, if not impossible, to prove any of this beyond a reasonable doubt. For just a few minutes, cast all of that aside.
The White House deliberately withheld an important Benghazi-related document in the face of a lawful Congressional subpoena. It took a court order and a lawsuit from a citizen watchdog group to ultimately gain access to the email detailing Susan Rice’s interview preparations. And, lo and behold, the White House did coach Ms. Rice to lie to the American people and blame the attack on a YouTube video.
That alone is criminal. Forget about all of the other elements of the scandal… to deliberately withhold and unnecessarily redact a document during a congressional investigation is criminal and grounds for impeachment!
I am not trying to say that all the other components of the Benghazi scandal aren’t important… they absolutely are. But we cannot afford to be fighting this war on five or six fronts. If we want to get to the bottom of this and nail Barack Obama, this needs to be the focus!
Congress asked for documents related to Benghazi. Not only did it ask for them nicely, but Congress used its authority to lawfully demand the release of these documents. The Obama administration’s redaction of this key Benghazi email is no different than Richard Nixon’s attempts to erase and doctor the Watergate tapes! In both cases, you had a President who was deliberately destroying/withholding evidence of a crime being committed.
Out of the thousands of pages that have been turned over to the Congressional investigators, the White House wants us to believe that there was nothing political behind the decision to redact the ONE email that proved the White House prepped Susan Rice to lie to the American people!
That isn’t coincidence! And it isn’t a coincidence that it took a judge and a court ruling to compel the administration to release the email against its will!
There are a number of parts of the Benghazi scandal that are absolutely despicable and I am outraged over all of them. But Congress has to be smart with how they pursue this and they need to make sure that the crimes they are accusing the administration of committing are actually provable!
Here, you have an email connecting 12 senior White House officials – including the President’s spokesman, Jay Carney – with Susan Rice’s interview preparations. You have officials, including Carney, who have come out on the record and denied having prepped Susan Rice to lie to the American people. Then, when Congress began demanding documents, the SINGLE email that proved the administration’s narrative was a lie just “coincidentally” happened to be completely redacted.
What sets this criminal charge apart from all the others is that not only is it 100% provable, but it is also 100% impeachable!
There isn’t any he-said, she-said involved. Congress doesn’t even need to wrestle any more documents out of the White House to prove it. The fact that the White House redacted the most important Benghazi email is proof enough that a crime has been committed.
Now, John Boehner has announced plans to establish a select committee for the Benghazi investigation. This committee will have real subpoena power and the ability to truly get to the bottom of this scandal. It is absolutely imperative, however, that Congress doesn’t pursue charges that it can’t actually prove!
The White House’s decision to withhold vital documents from a Congressional investigation is criminal! If it turns out to be the decision of a low-level staffer, that person needs to be fired. But if it goes up the chain of command – which is likely given the seniority of those included in the email trail – then the buck stops with the President. It took a watchdog group’s lawsuit to force the administration to hand over documents, but Congress doesn’t have the authority to sue the Executive branch. The only recourse that Congress has to respond to criminal acts is impeachment!
The four brave Americans who lost their lives on that tragic day aren’t able to speak out now. They can’t demand that Congress does anything. Only you can force Congress to get to the bottom of this cover-up once and for all!
