For the last couple months, we've been covering Navy SEAL Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher's case. This man is an American hero. As a member of SEAL Team 7, Gallagher received two Bronze stars for valor.
But since last fall, Gallagher has been in prison. The Pentagon accused him of war crimes for killing an ISIS terrorist and then holding his re-enlistment ceremony next to the dead body. He had been held in the brig, alongside convicted rapists, murderers, and sex offenders.
Conditions were so bad that Gallagher's own children had to wear hospital gowns when they visited for fear that they might excite the convicted pedophiles. And they were only allowed to hug their father once for that very reason.
We have been fighting for Eddie Gallagher's release, pressuring Congress to take up his case. I am writing you this morning to tell you that it is working.
Last week, Reps. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) and Duncan Hunter (R-CA) took this fight directly to the White House, telling Trump about Eddie Gallagher's case and pleading with the President to intervene.
That is exactly what he did. This week, Eddie Gallagher was moved from the brig into a low security prison while he awaits trial. Now, he can actually hug and kiss his family members when they come to visit.
But the fight is not over. Eddie Gallagher still has to sit in prison for 54 days before he gets his day in court. Every day that this American hero sits behind bars is a stain on this country.
President Trump stepped in because YOU pressured Congress to take up the case. Now it is time to finish this!
A military judge threw out the bulk of the charges against Eddie Gallagher last month. The foundation of the "case" against him was that after he killed an ISIS fighter, he posed for pictures next to the dead body.
If the military had that evidence, then it would be an open and shut case. The military claimed they had photographic evidence proving a murder. But the military didn't have the proof. A judge threw out the photographing charges all together.
You'd think that when the main evidence of a "war crimes" case is thrown out -- I say that because this Navy SEAL is being accused of killing an ISIS terrorist, not a civilian. Wrong. The Pentagon is still moving forward with the "murder" charges.
Their evidence? There is no evidence that any of this happened and Gallagher and his unit vehemently deny the charges. Prosecutors have been able to do all of this based on anonymous accusations. They can't prove any of this, so they resorted to harassing and threatening his teammates to get them to bear false witness against their Chief.
Leftists are already claiming that Trump broke the law by having him transferred to a low-security prison. They're calling it "unlawful command influence" and want to get Eddie Gallagher thrown back into the brig with convicted rapists and murderers. As if American heroes should be forced to sit in the brig with convicted criminals when they haven't even gotten their day in court yet...
I want to reiterate that this wouldn't have happened without YOU. Together, we bombarded Congress with FaxBlasts demanding that Congress step in to help this hero. The result was that Duncan Hunter, Dan Crenshaw, 17 other Congressmen signed onto a letter pleading for Trump's help. That letter got the President's attention and he personally ordered Gallagher to be transferred to better conditions.
This is a great victory. Tens of thousands of Conservatives pressured Congress to take up this man's case and they did. And not only that, but it worked.
But we will not stop fighting until Chief Edward Gallagher is released from prison for good!
This man answered the call and volunteered to defend you. He earned not one, but two Bronze Stars for valor. The man's a hero.
Last month, I asked you to answer the call to help defend him, knowing full well that the debt we owe to Eddie Gallagher can never truly be repaid. But that is exactly what you did. And because of you, Gallagher is allowed to hug and kiss his wife and children again.
We can finish this. We can free this man. But we need your help right now.
We ask heroes like Edward Gallagher to sacrifice everything for this country. He fought for you and your way of life. In his time of need, please keep fighting for him.
