With all eyes on the border wall fight, Congressional Republicans are trying to do something truly sinister: They want to fully restore funding to the United Nations!
When President Trump cut hundreds of millions from the United Nations' budget, UN officials swore that they would be able to find the budget elsewhere. In addition to cutting 300 million from the UN's Palestine mission, Trump also scaled back US contribution peacekeeping operations by 220 million. In one year, the president cut half a billion from the United Nations.
UN officials have tried desperately to make up this funding, but no other country is willing to fill the gap. The European Union refused... China refused... As did countries in the Middle East. The United Nations asked every country on earth to increase their donations and not a single country agreed.
So now, the United Nations is turning back to us. That's right, they are launching a full lobbying effort to pressure Congress into restoring the cuts that President Trump enacted.
One of the spending bills Congress must pass to reopen the government is the State Department Appropriations Act. This bill will outline spending for not only State Department activities, but will also the United States' donations to the United Nations.
While all eyes are on the border wall fight, traitors in the Senate are trying to pass a bill increasing funding for the United Nations!
Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) recently announced that he was not going to seek re-election in 2020. This leaves him open to 'follow his conscience' without worrying about political consequences.
He released a statement yesterday declaring that there is "no excuse for even a short-term, partial government shutdown." It was Alexander who teamed up with Democrats to restore funding to areas of the UN that Trump cut, such as the radical climate treaty.
All told, the GOP bill in the Senate would give the United Nations more than 1.83 billion in funding.
This is unacceptable. Nancy Pelosi has already promised steep funding increases for the UN once she takes over.
This is government shutdown fight is our last, best shot to cut the United Nations' budget!
The United Nations is celebrating right now. Not only did they strengthen the rules to force the US to comply with their radical climate treaty, but a US Federal Judge also cited UN law to force the Trump administration to track down deported illegal aliens and bring them back into the country.
Now, Congress is about to restore all of the funding cuts that Trump made and give the United Nations even more power to target our sovereignty.
With everyone focused on the border wall fight, they think they can slip this through without you noticing.
But now that you know what is happening, you have an obligation to fight back!
