Last week, the GOP-controlled Senate finally held a vote on S.130, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. The bill had enough votes - 53 - to technically pass in a final vote, but it didn't have the 60 required for cloture (in other words, the Democrats filibustered it).
There has been a lot of misinformation around this bill, on both the right and the left (and especially in the media). This is what the legislation would have done: If a baby is born alive, doctors and nurses must do everything in their power to save and preserve that life and no one -- not the mother and certainly not the healthcare staff -- have a right to condemn the baby to die.
That shouldn't be controversial. Every year, hundreds of babies are born-alive in the United States from botched abortions. While a law passed during the George W. Bush administration is supposed to protect these babies, it doesn't go far enough.
Doctors can still kill these born-alive babies without real consequence or they can simply ignore the child and allow him or her to asphyxiate (suffocate) or die from exposure.
Anyone who has been present for a birth knows that the first 60 seconds that this baby spends in this world are crucial. Nurses need to clear the baby's airways, check for any life-threatening defects or conditions that might need attention, warm their body temperature, and, of course, get the baby to cry. Skip these steps and the baby's chances of surviving plummet.
The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act would have prescribed criminal penalties to abortionists and nurses that skip these steps. Baby's who survive abortion procedures would have been guaranteed the same life saving and resuscitative care that other babies get when they're born. Any abortionist caught killing or neglecting these survivors would be charged with murder.
Democrats voted it down. They voted to keep the loopholes open that allow abortionists to kill alive and viable babies.
And now, the GOP wants to just walk away from the bill...
Democrats just voted to allow abortionists to commit infanticide. This isn't even about abortion. This is about protecting living, breathing babies when they need it the most.
Imagine the pain and fear running through a baby born-alive after a botched abortion procedure. Everyone in that room, just seconds earlier, was trying to kill them. Literally. Senator Ben Sasse's bill would have required them to save the baby and keep him or her alive.
By now, you should know the story of abortionist Kermit Gosnell. He is the most disgusting human being I have ever heard of. During his time as an abortionist in Philadelphia, he killed HUNDREDS of babies that were born alive after botched abortion procedures. He stabbed them with scissors, put them in freezers to die from exposure, and even flushed babies down the toilet. He treated them like absolute trash.
Prosecutors presented evidence that Gosnell had killed hundreds of born-alive babies but they could only get indictments on seven murder counts. Even then, the Judge threw out three of the murder cases because there wasn't enough evidence that the babies were "still alive" when Gosnell got to work stabbing them.
This evil human being killed hundreds of babies over the course of his career and prosecutors were only able to charge him with four murders. This is the gross injustice that Sasse's Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act is designed to rectify. If a doctor kills a baby after a botched abortion, then that doctor committed a murder.
Democrats voted against this bill because, in their words, it 'infringes on a woman's right to choose' and targets her 'reproductive rights.' Pardon my language, but that is total crap.
In these circumstances, the woman has already reproduced. The baby was born. She has no right to declare that a born-alive baby, a United States citizen, should die. That is what the Left is trying to protect: the right of mothers and doctors to kill unwanted, born-alive babies. It's pure evil.
Democrats are so in-love with abortion they believe that doctors should be allowed to finish the job if they fail the first time. If a baby happens to survive an abortion procedure -- which hundreds do in the US every single year -- Democrats believe doctors should be allowed a second chance to kill him or her.
I am also disgusted, however, with Republicans. The House of Representatives passed this bill in 2017. Mitch McConnell refused to let the Senate vote on it then. Only after Nancy Pelosi took over the Senate, and states like New York passed radical abortion bills, did Mitch let Ben Sasse's legislation come to the floor.
And now that it has come just FOUR votes short (three pro-life GOP Senators missed the vote, meaning that it actually has 56 votes), the GOP is walking away from it. They're not going to fight, pressure, or shame the Democrats. There won't be any horse trading or amendments to win over the four more liberals they need to pass it. The GOP is just moving on.
If Congress doesn't take action, hundreds of viable, born-alive babies will die this year.
Isn't that worth fighting for?
When my son was born, it was the happiest moment of my life. But it was also the most stressful. He entered this world with fluid blocking his airways. Nurses has to work to clear his nose and mouth so that he could take his first breath and let out that first beautiful cry.
But in operating rooms around the country, babies aren't given this treatment. Instead of keeping the baby warm, nurses can leave him or her exposed to the elements. Instead of clearing airways, doctors can put their hand over their tiny nose and mouth and block it. And without the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, there is nothing prosecutors can do to stop them...
You cannot let the GOP walk away from this. We fought tooth-and-nail to force the leadership to bring this common-sense bill to a vote. But now, they just want to push it aside. They "tried" and that's all they're willing to do.
Dozens of "moderate" House Democrats have said they would vote for the bill if it passes the Senate. But the GOP leadership would apparently rather move on to some other issue...
You MUST fight back and force them to hold the line!
