Yesterday, the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee held a voice vote and passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2020. Usually, these hearings last hours and hours as each member tries to add their own amendments to the bill. But this time, Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL) cut the hearing short after just eight minutes.
Instead of marking up the bill in the subcommittee, Shelby agreed to give Democrats an open amendment process when the full Senate Appropriations Subcommittee meets to vote on the bill tomorrow. The Left celebrated. They now have an opening to force a vote on their one-sentence amendment to cut off all border wall construction funding!
And already, Republicans are starting to team up with the Democrats on this!
The Left's amendment is no secret. They have been promising to force a vote on this ever since Trump declared his national emergency back in February in order to move forward with the border wall funding. House Democrats are already trying to force it through as well. It reads,
“Military construction funds may not be obligated, expended, or otherwise used to design or carry out a project to construct, replace, or modify a wall, fence, or other physical barrier along the international border between the United States and Mexico.”
This one sentence alone, if it passes, would shut down almost all 470+ miles of border wall construction scheduled over the next year. No Pentagon funds would be able to go to border security.
But it would actually go farther than that. Last year, when a caravan of over ten thousand illegal aliens was preparing to rush the border, Trump deployed the Army and National Guard to secure the border. Soldiers rolled out over 180 miles of razor wire to fill gaps in the border fence and prevent the caravan migrants from being able to climb over existing fencing. National Guard soldiers also installed concrete vehicle barriers at checkpoints and known smuggling routes to prevent trucks from rushing the border. All of that would be outlawed if this one sentence passes.
There are currently SIX Republicans (shown above) on the Senate Appropriations Committee who have already voted to cancel Trump's border wall funding: Alexander (TN), Blunt (MO), Collins (ME), Moran (KS), Murkowski (AK), and Rubio (FL). Only one of them needs to flip tomorrow to approve the anti-border wall amendment. And since turncoat Mitt Romney (R-UT) has already promised to vote for it when it reaches the floor, that means the Democrats only need to flip three GOPers in order to revoke the border wall funding!
In the house, the numbers are razor thin as well. Democrats are terrified of what just happened in North Carolina last night. Three weeks ago, the Democrat was winning in the polls by double digits. Trump held two rallies in the District and the Republican candidate came back to win it. Vulnerable Dems are refusing to vote against the border wall. The Left is going to need GOP votes in order to push this through.
The big vote is tomorrow!
It all comes down to this...
I have waited my entire life for a President willing to do whatever is necessary to secure the border.
Republicans spent two years blocking Trump from securing the border in order to please their corporate donors. When Nancy Pelosi took over the House, she refused to approve even a cent of funding for new border wall construction.
When Trump took office, there was 353 miles of pedestrian fencing along the border. But with Donald Trump's national emergency order, the Pentagon now estimates they will be able to put up more than 470 miles of pedestrian fencing in the next year alone.
But if the Democrats and their GOP allies are able to push their amendment through tomorrow, then it is all over...
Our country's future is being written right now. You CANNOT let the establishment surrender on the border wall!
