Back in April, Florida Representative Francis Rooney (R) introduced the Thomas Jefferson Public Service Act. This bill has a simple goal: finally return Congress to the service model the Founders intended.
Any Congressman or Senator who served longer than 12 years would see their salary slashed to one dollar. People would be able to serve as long as they want, but the American People wouldn't foot the bill.
Rooney named his bill after Thomas Jefferson because Jefferson specifically wanted America to be run by citizen legislators. Serving in Congress was never supposed to be a career. Yet, today, most Members of Congress -- in both the House and Senate -- are millionaires.
Some people like Rep. Darrel Issa (R-CA) earned their millions in the private sector. Others have gotten rich off of their offices. The idea of "public servants" staying in office for decades and earning millions is disgusting.
President Trump is onboard and backs the Rooney plan. As you know, Trump is not collecting a salary. He donates it every quarter to different government agencies and departments.
And here is the best thing: the Thomas Jefferson Public Service Act can pass as a law and does NOT need to pass as a constitutional amendment!
Please send your FaxBlast to Congress now and DEMAND they support the Thomas Jefferson Public Service Act and remove anyone from GOP leadership who stands in their way!
There is a pretty simple rule in Congress. If pieces of legislation stops getting co-sponsors after they are introduced, they're likely dead in the water.
But if more people gradually start attaching their name to a bill, that shows that people are working behind the scenes to make it happen.
The Thomas Jefferson Public Service Act was introduced in mid-April and immediately gained co-sponsors. We began pushing for it as well, blasting Congress with hundreds of thousands of FaxBlasts demanding term limits.
Now, more Congressmen are signing on! Just last week, North Carolina Rep. George Holding (R) attached his name to the legislation. The bill is now moving forward.
McConnell and Ryan have refused to entertain the idea of term limits. Honestly, I can't really blame someone like McConnell for resisting term limits. He has been in office for 33 years and made a fortune on it. He's treated public service like a career. But over that time, can you think of any new or exciting proposals that McConnell has brought to the table?
People who "serve" for three decades tend to run out of good ideas.
Ted Cruz has been pushing for this issue since day one of the Trump Presidency. The biggest hurdle for that was that his resolution was drafted as a Constitutional amendment. That would require two-thirds of both the House and the Senate to agree to it.
But Rep. Rooney's bill is not a constitutional amendment. It would be passed as a basic law. And because this has to do with Congressional pay, it can be attached to any spending bill, just like the leadership does to approve pay raises.
All of a sudden, imposing term limits isn't such a longshot...
Donald Trump ran on a campaign promise to “Drain the Swamp.” One of his proposals was instituting term limits in Congress. This is how we do it.
Trump has given the plan his full endorsement. Now it is our job to push it across the finish line!
We can debate about how long we think those limits should be. But in order for that to happen, the leadership needs to schedule the vote. For the last year and a half, Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan were able to block term limits from coming up by blaming the Democrats. Since a constitutional amendment needs a 2/3 vote, they blamed Democrat inaction and never bothered to schedule a vote.
But now, this bill can pass with a simple Republican majority!
Term limits now! Join the movement and help us bombard Congress with FaxBlasts demanding they schedule Francis Rooney's Drain the Swamp term limits bill for a vote!
People don't run for re-election 5 times in order to serve their constituents. They do it to serve themselves.
That is what Francis Rooney's bill is all about: restoring the United States Congress to a service model, not one centered on personal-enrichment.
There is no doubt that the career politicians like Chuck Schumer (36 years), Nancy Pelosi (31 years), and Mitch McConnell (33 years) will fight us tooth and nail. This isn't going to be something Congress does on its own. You need to force it!
We have never been this close to dismantling Washington DC's permanent political class...
Our goal today is to bombard Congress with a quarter million FaxBlasts and DEMAND the bill receive its vote.
But we need your help!
Please send your FaxBlast to Congress now and DEMAND they support the Thomas Jefferson Public Service Act and remove anyone from GOP leadership who stands in their way!
Sincerely,
Joe Otto
