Over the weekend, Democrats demanded that Trump withdraw federal law enforcement officers from Portland, Oregon. The Left actually claims that the presence of federal agents is what is prolonging the riots plaguing that city. The truth is there had been nightly riots in Portland for five straight weeks before Trump sent anyone in..
The Mayor of Portland and Governor of Oregon refused to protect their constituents. They refused to stop the angry mob from causing damage to federal buildings and threatening federal employees.These rioters have already done 50 thousands in damage to the federal courthouse. They spray-painted graffiti on the walls. broke windows, and tossed lit fireworks inside to try to burn the building down. As you remember, Trump signed an executive order earlier this summer giving federal agents authority to defend federal property from rioters.
The result has been swift. A combination of officers from DHS and the Department of Justice have begun arresting the rioters responsible for the vandalism and attacks against federal officials. There have also been reports -- based on FAA airspace restrictions -- that there are now DHS drones overhead to photograph violent rioters to ensure they are held accountable. Dozens of the most violent rioters are now in custody and facing federal crimes.
Democrats are outraged. They didn't care when the Portland riots went on for over five weeks, far longer than seen in other cities. No, they only expressed outrage when Trump fulfilled his promise and sent in the feds.
Now, they are promising to pull the plug on Trump's operation. Nancy Pelosi is bringing a bill to the floor THIS WEEK to cancel federal funding for crowd control operations like what we're seeing in Portland.
Think about how radical a proposal that is. Pelosi is targeting the Department of Homeland Security first. She wants to make it illegal for DHS to spend even a cent of federal funding on crowd control activities.
Last week, one of the rioters in Portland decided that he wanted to ambush federal officers. He stood outside a door that he knew the officers would walk through, and when it opened, he clubbed the first person he saw with a hammer. He was tackled, arrested, and now faces federal charges for attempting to kill a federal law enforcement officer.
But the way the Left is telling the story, you would think that he was just an innocent bystander who did nothing wrong. Even though the Dewalt hammer he used has been filed into evidence and the photos released to the public, the Left wants you to believe that he was kidnapped, not arrested...
The Mayor of Portland, Ted Wheeler, ordered federal agents to "stay in their buildings." The mob interpreted this as the City of Portland having their back. So, rioters picked up heavy steel fencing and actually barricaded the officers inside the building they were in. Other rioters then got to work trying to burn down the courthouse... with the federal officer trapped inside. Yes, the feds broke out of the courthouse using tear gas, rubber bullets, and started arresting everyone involved. It was absolutely justified.
But according to Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats, those officers should have just stayed inside the building and waited to be burned alive...
That is how radical this latest proposal is. Up for consideration in Congress this week is the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act. This is one of the twelve spending bills that must pass before the end of September in order to avoid a government shutdown. Congress is set to begin debating the bill this week.
Since many of the officers involved in Trump's law enforcement operation (Border Patrol, ICE, Secret Service, etc) fall under the Department of Homeland Security, the Left sees this as an easy way to shut it all down.
On the other side of the aisle, the Republicans are cowards. Yea, there are some good, faithful conservatives in the bunch. But the majority of the GOP is made up of cowards. Every year, Democrats pack the Homeland Security spending bill with amendments to block DHS agencies like Border Patrol and ICE from actually doing their jobs and the GOP doesn't even pretend to put up a fight.
The Left knows that these cowards won't put up a fight. They know that the GOP cares more about avoiding a government shutdown than anything else. So, they are packing this new Pelosi amendment into the bill. They are literally trying to pull the plug on Trump's law enforcement order in Portland...
But you can still stop them!
Democrats have been promising their Leftist base that they would force a vote on a bill to defund the police. They are still going to try to cut off law enforcement grants when the DOJ spending bill comes up for a vote, but they want to kick it off by cutting Homeland Security's funding.
This is the Department that runs TSA, ICE, Border Patrol, the Coast Guard, and even the US Secret Service. Yes, the very secret service agents who defended the White House last month against rioters armed with explosives are set to have their crowd control funding cut.
Not only that, but DHS also runs the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. So not only would agents themselves be prohibited from using non-lethal force against rioters, but DHS would also be prohibited from training local, state, and other federal agencies in the use of these crowd control tactics.
On the Senate side, Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) are introducing similar amendments to stop Trump from using federal agents to enforce the law in cities like Portland.
This is it. Democrats are rushing this to the floor this week. And they expect the GOP to cave just like they always do..
