What a tweet to wake up to.
The GOP establishment thought it was a done deal. The Democrats believed that they had won a huge victory. Then, President Trump bursts their bubble by threatening to veto it all.
"I am considering a veto of the Omnibus Spending Bill on the fact that the 800,000 plus DACA recipients have been totally abandoned by the Democrats (not even mentioning in the bill) and the Border Wall, which is desperately needed for our National Defense, is not fully funded," Trump tweeted out.
The tweet hit Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell like a ton of bricks. They had already told their colleagues to go home for a long weekend. They fully expected Trump to just go along with their surrender.
The White House gave the Democrats a final offer this past week. They would allow Obama's illegal alien "dreamers" to stay in the program for three more years in return for full border wall funding. The concession would not put these illegals on the pathway to citizenship at all.
Democrats said no. They're holding out hope that they retake Congress in the fall so they can force Trump to give them a better offer. Republican leaders were more than happy to go along with that since they want to give out amnesty and keep the border wide open.
The Omnibus bill got roughly 80% of Democrats to vote for it. On the flip side, only about half of Republicans voted for the massive spending bill. This is a Democrat bill, which is why Nancy Pelosi was caught bragging that Paul Ryan gave them more than they got when they had the majority.
Trump is, once again, changing the rules of the game. He knows that this may be his last chance to use leverage to force a border wall authorization.
