I warned you this was coming. Democrats in Congress are eying TODAY as the day they force a vote on their radical gun control bills, namely H.R. 8 and H.R. 1446.
As I reported yesterday, these two bills are terrible enough on their own but when combined, would give the Federal government the power to indefinitely block millions of lawful gun purchases a year!
A few people emailed in asking questions about how these bills would work, so let me clarify. Remember: Democrats have spent four years drafting truly heinous gun control proposals. They have taken bills that might seem innocuous at first glance and designed them to allow the government to trample our rights.
H.R. 8 would require a background check on all private gun purchases and transfers, with limited exceptions. The goal behind this is to allow the government to monitor and record every time a firearm changes hands in this country. Right now, they are only allowed to document and record sales at gun stores.
Attached to H.R. 8 is H.R. 1446, which would close what Democrats call the "Charleston Loophole." Almost all gun purchase background checks are instant or near-instant. But Federal law allows the FBI to take 72 hours to process a background check. That way, if results are inconclusive or if investigators aren't sure about a person, they can double check to make sure they aren't a prohibited person.
Democrats say that 72 hours isn't long enough. They want to give the FBI 10 business days to process an "instant" background check and then an additional 10 business days to process any appeals.
When you fill out a background check form, it is only good for 30 calendar days. If you start the background check process and don't take a firearm home within 30 days, the form becomes invalid and you have to start the process all over again. That is just long enough for the Federal government to be able to run out the clock on millions of lawful gun purchases every year.
Let's say you walked into a gun store after work last year on December 18th to buy a gun. Think of it as an early Christmas present. The ATF says that 973,470 Americans bought a gun that week, the 6th busiest week for the FBI's background check system ever. As soon as you fill out the Form 4473 to undergo the background check, the clock starts ticking. You would have had until January 17th before that background check form would expire.
If H.R. 1446 had been passed into law, though, the ATF would have been able to drag the background check and appeal on for 20 business days. Thanks to the design of the Federal calendar, the government would be allowed to send you a final answer on your background check four days AFTER your form would have expired. So, you would have to go back to the beginning and start all over again. But even if you started a new background check the very next day, the government would be able to do it again. Because of President's day, they would be able to run out the clock AGAIN, blocking you from taking home that gun for a second month in a row. And it goes on and on and on...
Combined, H.R. 8 and H.R. 1446 would give the Federal government the power to block millions of lawful gun purchases every single year, simply by running out the clock on their background checks. I am not talking about criminals being rejected. I am talking about law-abiding Americans who have a legal right to purchase a gun, but would be blocked from doing so...
And the Democrats believe this is a "compromise"...
The vote on this is TODAY. Democrats are confident that they will get Republican votes. They have even named their package the "Bipartisan Background Check Act."
You CANNOT let the GOP cave on this! Democrats want this power to indefinitely block gun purchases specifically so they can use it. And believe me... if this package passes, they will use this newly created power to block millions of gun purchases per year, for no reason at all...
The vote is happening today. You must rise up and stop this anti-gun bill from passing!
Stop them before it's too late!
