I saw something yesterday that I just couldn't believe was true. Columbus, Ohio, a city named after Christopher Columbus (the explorer who "discovered" America) moved forward with removing a 21-foot-tall statue of their namesake.
What did a statue of Christopher Columbus in Ohio have to do with George Floyd's death in Minnesota? Absolutely nothing. But, the mob demanded that the statue come down and the cowards and idiots on the city council obliged.
And yet, just when I thought the liberal lunacy had reached peak levels, Republicans found a way to one-up them...
Yesterday, Senators James Lankford (R-OK) and Ron Johnson (R-WI), shown above, announced that they were teaming up to abolish Columbus Day and replace it with a federal holiday honoring "Juneteenth."
What is Juneteenth? It commemorates the fact that the city of Galveston, Texas found out about the Emancipation Proclamation on June 19, 1865. They were the last city to find out that Lincoln had freed the slaves 1,001 days prior.
If you are confused, that's okay. Before this year, Juneteenth wasn't even on anyone's radar. It had been celebrated in Texas, but it wasn't a real holiday anywhere else.
Now, these two idiots want to make it a federal holiday. But in order to do that, they say they need to remove another federal holiday from the calendar. And in the interest of "compromise," they have chosen to eliminate Columbus Day...
“In response to a bipartisan effort to give federal workers another day of paid leave by designating Juneteenth a federal holiday, we have offered a counterproposal that does not put us further in debt,” Johnson explained yesterday. “We support celebrating emancipation with a federal holiday, but believe we should eliminate a current holiday in exchange. We chose Columbus Day as a holiday that is lightly celebrated, and least disruptive to Americans’ schedules.”
Johnson concluded by calling Juneteenth "America's second independence day" and encouraged Democrats and Republicans alike to support his bill. I usually like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but this man is an idiot.
When the Declaration of Independence was signed, John Adams wrote to his wife that he expected that historic day would be "celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival." Adams had originally predicted that July 2nd would become our Independence Day, since that was when the Continental Congress signed the Declaration. However, we celebrate it two days later, since the 13 colonies ratified the Declaration on July 4, 1776.
The point is, the minute the Declaration of Independence was signed, people knew that this was a historic moment. People understood that this was the young nation's Independence Day and would be celebrated for generations to come.
As I said, Juneteenth honors the fact that Galveston, Texas learned about Abraham Lincoln's executive order to free the slaves 1,001 days after it was signed. It is NOT the day that the slaves were freed. It is just the day that the people of Galveston found out about it...
Just to put this in perspective, "Juneteenth" did not even become a Texas holiday until 1980. Historically, the African American community had celebrated January 1st as Emancipation Day, since that is the day Lincoln's order went into effect.
But just like the revisionists historians want to tear down our statues, now they want to elevate a holiday that, frankly, next to no one had ever heard about. To call Juneteenth our "second Independence Day" is beyond stupid considering the fact that the holiday didn't even formally exist for the first 204 years of our country's existence...
These two GOPers are cowards. They stupidly believe that they can appease the anti-America mob. The truth is that if you give these rabid leftists an inch, they will take a mile. What started as a debate over Confederate Statues has now turned into a movement to destroy Mount Rushmore (because "racism").
That is why this shameful surrender must be stopped before it is too late!
But again, this isn't just an effort to cave to the Leftist mob and give them a federal holiday on Juneteenth. The Johnson-Lankford bill would also abolish Columbus Day, something that the Far Left has been trying to accomplish for years.
I want to be absolutely clear and explain why the Far Left wants Columbus Day abolished. They believe that this should still be "indigenous land." They don't only reject the American founding... They reject the very premise of Europeans settling this continent. When they attack Christopher Columbus, they are attacking America itself.
It is shameful to see these two GOP cowards cave like this. They stupidly believe that appeasing these radicals can work.
We must stop this bill from becoming law!
