This is a Red Alert! Republicans are rushing to pass the Left's radical "background checks" bills and are hoping they can catch you off guard!
We are facing the biggest threat to the 2nd Amendment that we have seen in years. This is far worse than anything that we saw during the Obama administration because, for the first time, the GOP is actually eager to pass gun control.
As we have mentioned, the only thing holding the Republicans back is that they aren't sure how much they can get away with. In other words, they are trying to figure out just how much they can chip away at the 2nd Amendment before they make you angry enough to fight back.
They are debating a number of different proposals. Over the last couple of days, we have covered two of them: the assault weapon ban and a confiscation proposal known as Extreme Risk Protection Orders. Today, we want to focus on the "compromise" measure that the GOP is looking at: background checks.
On Monday, President Trump addressed the nation on the two mass shootings that took place over the weekend. One of the things that he called on Congress to do was to "strengthen background checks."
While that sounds reasonable, the devil is in the details...
Not surprisingly, the Left's push to "strengthen background checks" is nothing but a thinly veiled attempt to move towards their ultimate goal: civilian disarmament. And now the Republicans are being tricked into helping them accomplish this...
The Left is pushing two bills: The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 (H.R.8) and the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019 (H.R.1112). Both of these bills are designed to advance us towards the Left's dream of civilian disarmament. Both Nancy Pelosi and Mitch McConnell are now negotiating over calling a Special Session to advance these radical gun control bills.
Here are the facts. The shooters in both Texas and Ohio bought their guns legally. They both filled out the ATF Form 4473 paperwork and underwent a background check. The FBI checked their criminal and mental health records and did not find anything in these shooters' histories to justify blocking the sale.
Neither of these shooters had a paper trail. The background check system didn't fail here. It worked as designed. The government isn't allowed to block law-abiding citizens from purchasing guns.
But the Left is now claiming that the government should have that power: that even if you have a clean criminal and mental health record, the government should be allowed to block you from buying a gun anyway. This is a radical change. Instead of having a right to keep and bear arms, this would make gun ownership a privilege.
The Bipartisan Background Checks Act (H.R.8) would require background checks for all gun purchases and transfers. Right now, background checks are only required for purchases from licensed gun dealers. This bill would add the same requirements to private transfers and sales as well.
Practically, this would be impossible to enforce. Democrats know that criminals will ignore this law. When criminals buy guns, they are already breaking a half dozen other gun laws. One more won't stop them. No, this bill isn't designed to target criminals... It is designed to target YOU, the law abiding citizen. You see, in order for the background check system to work, there has to be a record every time a gun changes hands. Without that database, the government cannot determine whether a sale or transfer was done legally.
That is what the Democrats are after. This is nothing but a backdoor attempt to implement a nationwide gun registry. We know from history that every time a country has forced its citizens to register their guns, that database was eventually used to confiscate their firearms. It happened in the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and even in Venezuela. Every country that has ever banned guns started by forcing people to register their firearms first. The Left knows they can't seize Americans' guns unless they first know who has them...
That is what this bill does: it gives the government those records and sets the stage for Democrats to impose a nationwide gun ban in the future!
The second bill, the Enhanced Background Checks Act (H.R.1112), would give the government the power to block gun sales without even having to give you a reason why.
When Congress created the National Instant Background Check System (NICS) back in the 1990s, it was designed to be instantaneous, even though the FBI was still using paper records at the time. Part of the compromise behind the bill was that the FBI would have to make a decision on background checks within 72 hours. If the government couldn't instantly decide whether someone is allowed to own a gun, they would have three calendar days to make that determination. If they failed to meet the deadline, then the purchaser would be allowed to buy the gun anyway.
This safeguard is important. Without this provision, the government would have the power to block all gun sales simply by refusing to process the background checks. This safeguars means that if you're a law abiding citizen, the government cannot block you from purchasing a gun.
This new bill, however, would abolish those safeguards. Instead of being capped at 72 hours, the FBI would have 10 business days to approve or deny a background check. And if Americans challenged a denial, then the FBI would have another 10 business days to process the appeal. Under this bill, the government would have the power to force you to wait 20-21 business days before taking a gun home (depending on how quickly the FBI receives the appeal).
This is really dangerous. When you fill out the ATF Form 4473, it is only good for 30 calendar days. After that, you have to go through the process again (to make sure you haven't committed a crime in the meantime). If the government has 20-21 business days to process a background check, even if they ultimately approve your purchase, the original background check form would have expired at that point. Then, you would have to start the process all over again...
In a given year, 7-9 months have 21 or fewer business days. If this bill passes, then the government would suddenly have the power to indefinitely block tens of millions of Americans from purchasing a firearm, without even needing to give a reason why...
Under this surrender package, all gun purchases and transfers would require a background check and the government would suddenly have the power to block the background checks from being processed all together...
The right to keep and bear arms would be no more. Instead, gun ownership would be reduced to a privilege that can be revoked at any time and for any reason...
This is the "compromise" that Republicans are rushing to push through. They want to rush these bills to President Trump's desk before the American people can learn how dangerous they are.
They are counting on the American people not knowing what is in these bills. With all eyes on the Assault Weapon Ban and gun confiscation proposal, the GOP thinks they can push this surrender package through without you noticing.
It is up to you, right here and right now, to prove them wrong!
Don't let them sneak these bills through...
