This week, the House and Senate both voted on a stand-alone bill to cancel Donald Trump's national emergency at the southern border.
The resolution would cancel all border wall construction and block almost 500 miles of border fencing from being built over the next year.
The legislation now goes to Trump's desk, where the President has already said he would veto it.
That should be the end of it right? Wrong!
The Left is now attaching their anti-border wall amendment to the annual Homeland Security Appropriations Act. If the GOP doesn't agree to cancel the border wall construction, then Democrats are threatening to shut down the government!
11 Republicans voted with Democrats in the Senate. They are Alexander, Blunt, Collins, Lee, Moran, Murkowski, Paul, Portman, Romney, Toomey, and Wicker. That is in addition to the 11 Republicans (and one former-Republican) who voted to cancel the border wall project in the House. They are Amash, Fitzpatrick, Herrera-Beutler, Katko, Johnson (SD), Massie, Rodgers (WA), Rooney (FL), Sensenbrenner,, Stefanik, Upton, and Walden
They don't have the votes to override Trump's veto, but they do have the votes to force this through in the spending package.
We know what the language of their amendment is. They are trying to add one sentence to the bill in order to shut the project down for good.
It reads: "Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no Federal funds may be used for the construction of physical barriers along the southern land border of the United States during fiscal year 2020."
This one sentence would pull the funding from almost 500 miles of planned border wall construction. Right now, a mile of new border wall is going up every single day. But if this passes, then the construction would immediately stop. Those projects would grind to a halt and remain unfinished.
That is what is at stake.
This week's votes were test votes. The Left wanted to see if the GOP was still willing to revoke Trump's border wall order. Now, they are rushing full speed ahead to shut it all down!
The GOP thinks they can slip this through. With all eyes on the Democrats' newest impeachment push, they think they can shut down border wall construction without having to pay the price.
They already held the test votes this past week. The bills passed with plenty of Republican support.
Now, the establishment is going for broke.
They have the votes. If they push this through, then the border wall would be officially outlawed.
And only you can stop them!
Sincerely,
Joe Otto
