On election day, we covered a horrible tragedy that happened in Maryland. A 60-year-old gun owner named Gary Willis woke at 5 am to the sound of pounding on his front door. When he answered, police notified him that they were their to seize all of his weapons. He wasn't a criminal or mentally insane. However, one of his extended family members didn't want him owning guns, so they filed for an extreme risk protection order to have them taken away.
When the man refused to comply with the confiscation order, a struggle ensued. One of the officers shot Willis dead in his own doorway.
This marks the first time a "red flag" confiscation order ended up killing an innocent gun owner.
I warned you on Tuesday that this would become the national norm if moderate Republicans and Democrats got their way. I warned that they were just waiting for the right tragedy to exploit in order to force a vote on their gun control agenda.
I regret to inform you that I was right.
On Wednesday evening, a deranged man walked into a country bar in California and began shooting. He used an illegally modified .45 caliber Glock 21 to kill 12 people and injure 25 others. Police had been to his house previously. They brought a mental health professional to interview him and see if the man needed to be institutionalized. But a whole team of mental health experts concluded at the time that he wasn't a threat.
Democrats are now demanding that Congress take action to make it easier for police to suspend someone's 2nd Amendment rights and confiscate their guns. And the Left is forcing the vote now!
The bill is called the Jake Laird Act (HR.5717). The bill would authorize state and local police departments to confiscate Americans' guns based on nothing but hearsay.
You have an individual right to keep and bear arms. It is not a privilege. This is important. The government can't just take your gun rights away at any time, like a driver's license. Prosecutors need to meet a high evidentiary bar to justify disarmament. Usually, that means someone must be charged or convicted of a felony or violent misdemeanor or adjudicated mentally defective.
There are some other ways someone can lose their gun rights -- like being dishonorably discharged from the military or losing your citizenship -- but most involve criminal history and mental health reasons.
HR.5717 would change all of that. Police would be allowed to disarm innocent gun owners without even needing to accuse them of doing something wrong. It would then be up to the gun owner to prove to a judge that he or she deserves the right to keep and bear arms.
Many people own firearms for self-defense. If needed, they are willing to use their guns to kill an assailant to protect them and their families. This bill is so vague that merely talking about using a firearm to potentially defend yourself one day could justify disarmament. This ridiculous bill allows for disarmament if someone displays a willingness to use their guns to hurt others, even if they're talking in terms of self-defense.
Right now, more Republicans have signed onto this bill than Democrats. More than half of those Republicans are never-Trumpers and just lost their re-election races. And they're not backing down.
They don't need to pretend to be conservatives anymore. They're joining up with the Democrats to force a vote on this massive gun confiscation bill!
When I was young, my great-uncle went through an extremely spiteful divorce. His wife at the time wanted to inflict as much pain on him as possible. Right before the court date, she called the police and filed for a restraining order against my uncle. He wasn't threatening her, she just wanted to stick it to him where it hurts. Police ended up seizing the firearms in their family home. Most were family heirlooms.
When the divorce proceedings were over, the judge decided to award the entire gun collection to the wife in the divorce. She spitefully sold the entire collection. To this day, my great-uncle gets flagged when he goes to try to buy a gun.
This will become the reality if HR.5717 passes. Family members, friends, and neighbors would all of a sudden have the power to turn gun owners into police. Not because they committed a crime, mind you. Simply because they don't want them to own guns anymore. And Police would be given full power to seize the guns.
Every gun owner in the country would suddenly become guilty until proven innocent.
We all agree that legitimately dangerous and deranged people should not own firearms. But this isn't about targeting the dangerous and deranged. In the Left's eyes, YOU are dangerous and deranged, simply if you own a gun or support the right to own a gun.
This week, a 60-year-old gun owner -- who was completely sane and innocent -- was killed in his doorway because he refused to go along with the police department's confiscation order. Police were there to confiscate his guns simply because an angry family member asked them to. And notice, not a single Democrat admitted that this is crazy. Not a single elected Democrat said that there is a problem with killing a gun owner in his own doorway because he refused to surrender his God-given right to keep and bear arms.
The only "crime" Gary Willis committed was that he assumed the phrase "shall not be infringed" still meant something.
Republicans are meeting with gun control Democrats as we speak. Defeated never-Trumpers like Mike Coffman (CO), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL), and Erik Paulsen (MN) have nothing left to lose. They've already signed onto the massive gun confiscation bill.
Now, they're forcing a vote!
When the entire Persian army came up against the 300 Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae in the year 480 BC, the Persians demanded that the outnumbered Spartan army lay down their weapons. "Molon labe," the Spartans shouted back. That translates roughly to "come and take them." For years, American gun owners have been daring the gun control Left to "molon labe." Now, the Left calling our bluff.
One innocent gun owner is already dead. After the California shooting this week, the establishment believes the time is right. These spineless never-Trump Republicans are teaming up with the Left to pass the biggest gun confiscation bill ever.
You MUST stop them, and you must stop them now before it's too late!
