Donald Trump ran on a campaign promise of passing Concealed Carry reciprocity. This is the premise that if someone is licensed or permitted to carry a concealed weapon in any state, they would be allowed to carry in every state.
In Illinois, it is impossible for most non-residents to get a carry permit. That means that when traveling through or visiting Illinois, you would have to disarm.
However there is a technical loophole in the law that seems to allow out-of-state visitors to legally carry a weapon inside their car if they hold a valid carry permit in their home state. This week, that loophole was put to the test.
A 70-year-old Vietnam veteran from Missouri was dropping a friend off in Illinois. When he stopped at a red light, a car pulled alongside him. After pretending to ask for directions, a young man in the other car pulled out a gun and tried to rob the vet at gunpoint.
That is when the 70-year-old pulled out his own gun and started firing. He killed the armed robber and injured his accomplice.
This was legal self-defense because the veteran never left his car. But if he had jumped out of his car with his gun, he would instantly have committed a felony for trying to defend himself thanks to Illinois’ backwards gun laws. If he had tried to defend himself in a store or restaurant, he would have committed a felony. The only reason this 70-year-old isn't in jail is because he stayed in his car.
This is why forcing Congress to pass the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act is so important!
Anti-gun liberals wish that they could have thrown the book at this Vietnam veteran. They are enraged that he was able to legally defend himself.
We here at Conservative Daily believe that the 2nd Amendment is the only concealed carry permit that someone should need. Tremendous progress has been made on that front and just yesterday, Georgia became the latest state to introduce “Constitutional carry” legislation.
We will get there eventually but the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act is a step in the right direction.
Not only would this bill allow licensed and permitted Americans to carry nationwide, but it would also allow people living in anti-gun states like New Jersey to get non-resident carry permits from states like Utah and Florida and circumvent their home state’s carry ban… This is a big deal.
This legislation would bust through the gun control iron curtain that surrounds states like New Jersey and California. It would, once and for all, give every single law-abiding American the opportunity to carry a concealed weapon nationwide.
Just this week, we saw a Vietnam veteran come dangerously close to becoming a felon simply for defending himself with a firearm. It doesn’t need to be like this.
The Second Amendment gives Americans the right to keep and bear arms. The right to carry a gun doesn’t disappear at the state line. This Constitutional right applies nationwide. Period.
We have the votes in Congress to pass this bill. We have a President who has promised to sign it. All that is missing is a push from We the People demanding they make it a priority!
Representative Hudson re-introduced the legislation on the first day that Congress went back into session and it has been filed as H.R. 38.
As of this morning, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017 now has 150 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives.
It is time to move forward. It is time to force a vote!
