Fellow Conservative,
This morning, Donald Trump did what no other President has ever done. He stood at a podium and criticized the 9th Circuit Court, saying that even a failing high school student understands that the President can block refugees from coming into the country.
Trump is absolutely right. The law couldn’t be clearer.
“Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.” (emphasis added)
When asked if he would intervene to help Trump, Senator Mitch McConnell said that it was not necessary. Likewise, we haven’t heard a peep from Paul Ryan on this.
Even though both men pushed for legislation in 2015 that would have done exactly the same thing as Trump’s order, they’re now running scared. They are terrified of actually having to fulfill their promises.
On top of that, we now have a handful of spineless Republicans teaming up with Diane Feinstein and the Democrats to formally block President Trump from ever restricting immigration again.
Members of Congress have forgotten who they serve. They have forgotten what the American people voted for.
How about we send them a little reminder?
The law I quoted above is part of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952. This legislation passed Congress with a super-majority in both the House and Senate. That’s right, a super-majority.
You see, President Truman vetoed this bill when it reached his desk. He didn’t want the President to have the authority to turn people away from this country. He believed in maintaining the status quo of open borders. Congress disagreed.
Truman vetoed the bill on a Wednesday. By Friday, both the House and Senate had overridden his veto and the legislation became the law of the land before the weekend.
The same legal and constitutional authority that allowed Barack Obama to increase the refugee quota also allows Donald Trump to reduce it. Period.
Trump is absolutely right to criticize the Judges in the 9th Circuit for politicizing this case. The law is crystal clear. But he should really turn his criticism towards Congressional Republicans.
You have turncoats like Lindsey Graham (SC) and John McCain (AZ) who are actually working with Diane Feinstein and Senate Democrats to reinstate Obama’s refugee quotas.
You have NeverTrump legislators like Sen. Ben Sasse (NE) openly defending the judges who are refusing to allow Trump’s order to move forward.
The GOP leadership is now indistinguishable from the Democrats. It’s shameful.
When Trump won, I knew that it would be a fight to force the GOP to honor their oaths.
Just a year and a half ago, these Congressmen and Senators voted to shutdown immigration from the Middle East. Even Chuck Schumer is on record saying a refugee “pause may be necessary.”
Now that we have a President willing to actually do that, they’ve tucked their tails and ran away.
You see, what Congressional Republicans haven’t figured out yet is that the age of “all talk, no action” politics is over. If they think they can promise one thing and then do another, they are sorely mistaken.
Every member of Congress swore an oath to protect the United States from all enemies, foreign and domestic. If they won't protect us from the former, it is up to YOU to declare that you consider them to be the latter!
