Yesterday, Donald Trump became the first President to speak at the NRA’s Convention since Ronald Reagan attended in 1983.

In that speech, President Trump delivered a simple message that was met with thunderous applause: “The eight year assault on your 2nd Amendment freedoms has come to a crashing end.”

He also told the audience that “the right of self-defense is essential to public safety.” He is, of course, referencing concealed carry reciprocity.

Trump and the NRA aren’t wasting any time. They are pushing for Congress to pass the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act right away!

A quarter of all Americans live in anti-gun states that prohibit them from carrying firearms for self-defense. Likewise, if a gun owner is traveling through a state like New Jersey, New York, or California, they are prohibited from carrying a firearm.

Even people who are licensed and trained in their home state are forced to disarm when driving through these blue states.

The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would change all that. Instead of relying on states to sign their own reciprocity agreements, this bill would make concealed carry permits valid nationwide.

If you look at driver’s licenses, for example, every state has different minimum standards. Practically everywhere in the country, drivers are allowed to make a right-turn at a red light. In New York City, however, drivers are not allowed to turn right on red. If New York wanted to, they could force everyone who drives through NYC to pass a driver’s test. But that would be ridiculous. Instead, any licensed American is allowed to drive in New York City, but it is up to them to know and follow the city’s traffic laws.

The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would apply a similar standard to carry permits. The permit/license would become valid nationwide and it would be up to the carrier to familiarize him/herself with the laws of the areas they’re visiting.

We here at Conservative Daily fully support constitutional carry. This is the idea that the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution should be the only carry permit anyone should need. There are currently 13 states with constitutional carry and others like Texas and Alabama are actively considering it.

But we also need to be realistic. Constitutional carry won’t happen overnight but the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act can move us in the right direction.

I used to live in New Jersey. When I asked my police chief about getting a concealed carry permit, he laughed at me. For far too long, liberal states have been allowed to laugh off our Constitutional rights. Not only will concealed carry reciprocity allow gun owners to carry across state lines but it will also put tremendous pressure on anti-gun states to start permitting their own residents to carry as well.

President Trump is on board. The bill now has 190 sponsors and co-sponsor in the House of Representatives, including three Democrats. We are approaching the finish line.

If We the People demand it, the bill will get pushed through Congress. But it is up to us to demand it!
