You can expect some pretty crazy laws and court rulings to come out of California. All three branches of government routinely conspire to snuff out even the smallest semblance of conservatism in the Golden State, so it is not surprising to see a law or court ruling that makes you just shake your head.
On Wednesday, a three judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that California high school administrators are well within their rights to prohibit students from wearing American flag t-shirts on Cinco de Mayo.
That’s right… the Court ruled that because the sight of an American flag might infuriate Hispanic students and potentially lead to violence, a school has the authority to ask students to change their patriotic attire.
This is what our country has come to. A citizen can be forced to cover up his or her American flag attire because it might make immigrants angry!
On May 5, 2010, during the school’s Cinco de Mayo celebration, a few Caucasian students chose to wear an American flag t-shirt to school. When they started receiving threats of violence from Hispanic students, school administrators ordered the students to change their clothing or turn their shirts inside-out, for fear that the American flag apparel would cause a violent outbreak. Instead of punishing the students who threatened violence, administrators blamed the Caucasian students for instigating the altercation with their patriotic apparel!
Administrators told the students that they could wear the American flag shirts on any other day, except for Cinco de Mayo. Even though Mexican-American students were adorned with Mexican flags – some even painted it on their faces – it was apparently unacceptable for students to wear an American flag instead. The students were forced to change their clothes.
As the media swarmed over the story, Administrators promised to look into the matter. All the students wanted was an apology, but they never got one. So, they took the school to court to try to receive an apology and a promise that it would never happen again.
Well, in what seemed like a pretty cut-and-dry first amendment case, the 9th Circuit actually ruled that the school was not only authorized, but correct to prohibit American flag shirts for fear that it might antagonize Hispanic students.
I’m sorry, I thought this was still America… Since when is the American flag legally considered to be antagonistic? Have we indeed reached such debasement that the American flag must be shielded from view to protect the sensibilities of others?
This is a slap in the face to every man and woman who sacrificed themselves for our flag. To say that the American flag – a worldwide symbol of freedom – cannot be displayed in a United States school for fear of riling up the Hispanic students is ludicrous!
There is absolutely nothing abrasive or argumentative about wearing an American flag shirt within the United States of America. I don’t care if the sight of an American flag offends a group of Hispanic students. They chose to live in the United States and coming into contact with the American flag is going to be part of their daily life.
Cinco de Mayo isn’t even a U.S. holiday. The idea that wearing patriotic apparel can be offensive, on any day, is absolutely ridiculous. yYet, this is what our children are being taught in school today. They are being taught that not only is the American flag an offensive symbol, but that it is even offensive to revere the flag. The delicate sensibilities of foreign students are being placed above the need to respect and honor the flag.
Remember when Michelle Obama infamously said that for the first time in her ‘adult’ life, she was actually “proud” of her country? Remember when Reverend Wright said “not God Bless America, God Damn America”? These weren’t just slips of the tongue or poor word choices… This is actually what liberals are teaching our children.
Just like Barack Obama went around the world to apologize for America’s actions, students today are being taught to apologize for their country. Rather than teaching students to see the American flag as a symbol of hope and freedom, liberal educators teach that the flag is a symbol of injustice and imperialism. Reverend Wright isn’t the only one who is saying “God Damn America.” Those words are being uttered across the country in our schools.
I am tired of being told to apologize for our history. I am tired of hearing liberal politicians and activist judges declare that the American flag is too inflammatory or too abrasive to be seen in public!
We can no longer allow the American flag and our way of life to be vilified and altered to “respect” the feelings of immigrants. Anyone who feels angered or even saddened at the sight of the American flag – the greatest symbol of liberty the world has ever known – is free to leave. There is no place in the U.S. for people who respond violently to the sight of the Stars and Stripes, and there is no place in Congress or Government for anyone who protects the opinions of immigrants over the rights of citizens!
