After something bad happens to us, it’s natural to ask, “What if…?”

“What if I’d taken a different route to work? Or,

“What if he had been late to the World Trade Center that day?” … “What if she had missed her flight?”

Today we are left to wonder, what if the Connecticut shooter’s mom had prevented his access to her guns? And most heart wrenchingly, “What if there had been a huge snowstorm Thursday night and Sandy Hook Elementary had been closed on Friday morning due to weather?”

As we process the horror in Newtown, it does not seem like the appropriate time to be arguing with each other over the Second Amendment. The time may be near to have an honest conversation but we certainly shouldn’t entertain a knee-jerk, emotional response. The fact is, we still know very little about why the tragedy occurred. But the anti-gun lobby started making noise on Friday, and by time the Sunday talk shows came on, they were in full force and calling for limits on our Second Amendment freedoms.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein promised on Sunday that, “the first day I’m going to introduce in the Senate, and the same bill will be introduced in the House, a bill to ban assault weapons. It will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation, and the possession…and it will ban the same for big clips of more than ten bullets.”

Eight years ago Feinstein said of banning all guns, “If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate for an outright ban, picking up every one of them…turn ‘em all in, I would have done it.”

President Obama and his administration—as well as many of his fellow Democrats in Congress—are hostile to our Second Amendment rights. The entire Fast and Furious operation was a ploy to call for more gun control. They have been trying to sneak gun control language into various bills, such as cybersecurity legislation. And recently, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) tried to put an amendment into the Defense Bill that will make it illegal for many of our veterans to own a gun—all without due process.

And then there is the United Nations, which is forcefully working on a gun control treaty that is supported by President Obama and current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

We absolutely agree that guns are dangerous in the hands of criminals, or the mentally ill. But then again, every weapon is dangerous if given to the wrong person. The horrible truth is, somewhere today it is likely there is a person drinking a fifth of alcohol, and he or she will get behind the wheel of a car and kill someone.

A teenager wills text while they are driving, and there will be a fatal crash.

A man will use his fist to beat a woman to death.

A drug user will cut someone’s throat to score a high.

It didn’t take guns or assault weapons to overpower planes on September 11. It just took evil, with a plan.

The Connecticut shooter—we do not wish to repeatedly use his name—was a sick person who did an unthinkable, horrible, devastating thing.

Sick people and bad people will do sick and bad things no matter what laws we pass and no matter how many regulations we put on society. Terrible, unimaginable things will happen. The safest thing we can do is lock ourselves in our homes and let the world pass by.  Sammy ‘The Bull’ Gravano, a mafia member whose testimony helped convict John Gotti said, “Gun control? It’s the best thing you can do for crooks and gangsters. I want you to have nothing. I’m a bad guy; I’m always going to have a gun.”

And Lieutenant Lowell Duckett was a special assistant to the Washington, DC police chief. He said, “Gun control has not worked in D.C. The only people who have guns are criminals. We have the strictest gun laws in the nation and one of the highest murder rates. It’s quicker to pull your Smith and Wesson than to dial 911 if you’re being robbed.”

We cannot assume Congress will protect our rights, especially in the wake of such a terrible event. And we cannot assume that Obama will not sign away our Second Amendment with an Executive Order. We need overwhelming support right now in Washington for our Constitution.

Neither side has domain over the many tears that have been shed, and will be shed, for those precious lives lost on Friday morning. Both sides can make valid points. Both sides can be passionate about their positions.

The facts will come out, and we will be able to look clearly at all factors involved; especially the big picture as it relates to our country and our rights. We can make changes, but we can make meaningful ones, not impulsive ones that restrict rights and ignore reality.

The bottom line is freedom vs. tyranny and oppression. Freedom means that everyone is free, and that means a few will abuse that privilege. Criminals do not abide by the law; they are criminals. And their targets will continue to be the weakest among us unless we put measures in place to defend ourselves against such vile acts.
