During his testimony before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on May 11, 2021, Fauci stated that "the NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology." However, uncovered emails between Fauci and colleagues contradict this claim.

Adding to the intrigue, a recent report by the Government Accountability Office confirms that the Wuhan Institute of Virology DID in fact, receive funding from the National Institutes of Health. However, the extent to which this funding was linked to the gain-of-function research cited by Rand Paul remains unclear.

Unclear up until Paul's investigation uncovered a research paper originating from the Wuhan Institute, titled "Discovery of a rich gene pool of bat SARS-related coronaviruses provides new insights into the origin of SARS coronavirus." This paper highlights the splicing of spike genes from two uncharacterized bat SARS-related coronavirus strains with the genomic framework of another SARS-related coronavirus. This splicing yielded adverse effects in primate epithelial cells and replication in human epithelial cells, squarely fitting the criteria of gain-of-function research.

And you'll never guess! This research, which is undeniably gain-of-function research, received partial funding from none other than the NIH.

Here's the crux: Fauci testified under oath that the NIH never funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Yet, he was aware of such research occurring and crucially misled about the NIH's involvement in funding what is undeniable gain-of-function research.
