As you are aware, President Biden's directive for an abrupt withdrawal from Afghanistan resulted in military personnel leaving behind over $85 billion worth of weapons and equipment. Regrettably, reports have surfaced indicating that the Biden administration is now seeking to charge former and active military members for the equipment they were explicitly instructed to leave behind.

These charges, reported to range upwards of $3,500, place an undue burden on individuals, especially in the challenging economic conditions faced by many due to the current administration. It is unconscionable to penalize our military members for following orders and complying with directives aimed at meeting evacuation deadlines during a chaotic and dangerous withdrawal.

The harrowing events surrounding the withdrawal, including the loss of 13 U.S. service members and injury to many others during an attack at Kabul's airport, highlight the immense challenges faced by our troops. It is disheartening to learn that, in addition to these challenges, they are now being subjected to financial penalties for fulfilling their duties in a situation where they had no control over the circumstances.

I recently came across a testimony from a former U.S. soldier on TikTok, detailing how he is being charged for gear he was ordered to leave behind in Afghanistan. The soldier explained the lack of space for extra gear during the evacuation and the subsequent directive to leave it behind. Charging our veterans for equipment they were explicitly told to abandon is not only unjust but also undermines the trust and respect owed to those who have served our nation faithfully.

I implore you, as my elected representative, to take swift and decisive action to address this issue. I urge you to champion the cause of our military members, both active and retired, and insist that the Biden administration cease these charges immediately. Our troops should not be held accountable for following orders during a time of crisis, and it is the responsibility of Congress to ensure that justice is served.
