Human Trafficking in the United States: A Hidden Crisis

Human trafficking is a grave violation of human rights that affects the United States and demands immediate attention. Reported cases of trafficking represent only a fraction of the actual problem, which is prevalent in all 50 states. Sex trafficking is particularly prevalent, accounting for 72% of reported cases. Traffickers exploit vulnerabilities and use various recruitment methods, including involvement of family members, intimate partners, employers, and online platforms. Vulnerability factors include recent migration, mental or physical health concerns, substance use, unstable housing, and runaway or homeless youth.

Globally, human trafficking is the second most profitable illegal industry, generating an estimated $150 billion in annual profits. Approximately 49.6 million people worldwide live in modern slavery, including forced labor, sex trafficking, and forced marriage. The United States border situation has become a concern, as lax policies have increased the risk of human trafficking. Unaccompanied minors crossing the border are particularly vulnerable, with around 60% falling into the hands of cartels involved in child pornography and drug trafficking.
