Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen held a meeting on Wednesday with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, despite repeated warnings from China to now let the high-level meeting take place.
McCarthy and a bipartisan, but apparently all pro-war, group of US lawmakers went ahead with the meeting, ostensibly to send a signal to Beijing that, in the event China tries to seize Taiwan by force, the US is ready to engage.
Taiwan has been democratically governed for 70 years and is home to more than 20 million people. China considers Taiwan part of its sovereign territory, and President Xi has made his reunification agenda clear.
This flex from the US isn’t new, as Biden explicitly said that US forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion in September 2022. When asked to clarify if he meant American boots on the ground – American men and women soldiers in hot conflict with China – Biden replied: "Yes."
It’s weird that neither that announcement last year nor the recent escalations from McCarthy and friends didn’t draw much attention or condemnation. I don’t know any Americans that favor war with China, but apparently the US federal government is all for it.
For all of modern history, the United States has treated China-Taiwan relations with "strategic ambiguity,” not clarifying whether the US would respond militarily to an attack on Taiwan. That long held precedent, like so many others, is no more under the Biden Administration.
As we watch America’s standing in the world plummet, you can no longer claim plausible deniability. You’re elected to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies both foreign and domestic.
Stand up against this reckless, pro-war policy immediately.
Remember your oath.
