When the Founders designed the United States Senate, they wanted to make it a deliberative body where legislation took time to pass. They wanted healthy debate and bipartisan compromise.

This is the purpose of the filibuster. In order for legislation to pass, it needs a bipartisan super majority to end debate. Over the years, rules have been added to create exceptions to the filibuster, such as the Byrd Rule and the changes to Executive and Judicial Branch confirmations.

Your colleagues now want to change the rules again. They are calling it the "Clyburn Rule," named after House Majority Whip James Clyburn. During a television interview this week, Clyburn proclaimed that the filibuster should be abolished for legislation dealing with "Constitutional rights."

This is a terrible idea and would no-doubt be abused to restrict Americans' liberties. The filibuster exists precisely to stop a political party with a slim majority from abolishing or restricting Americans' rights and freedoms.

Clyburn and others want to bypass the filibuster to pass legislation dealing with abortion, gun control, illegal immigration, insecure elections, speech restrictions, and even mandatory vaccinations. They want to take the most divisive issues in the nation and ram them through with the smallest possible majority, all while poll after poll after poll shows that the American people want Joe Biden gone.

I need you to recognize that this is political suicide. If you go down this path, you are finished.

I am demanding that you kill this proposed "Clyburn Rule" and every other attempt to push through these radical agenda items.
