During the Constitutional Convention, there was a heated debate over where the American Capital should be located. Every state wanted the country's capital to be in their territory, since that would lead to more power and wealth for them.

Unable to come to an agreement, they settled on creating a "District" along the Potomac River. They would take land from Virginia and Maryland to create this District of Columbia, but neither state would own it. They went out their way to make sure that the District of Columbia would NOT be a state.

Fast-forward 231 years and your colleagues want to undo this pact. Yesterday, the House of Representatives held the first of what will likely be many votes to make Washington DC a state.

Make no mistake: this is nothing but a political powergrab.

Nancy Pelosi's majority in the House is down to just two votes. The tie in the Senate means if even one Democrat defects, legislation and nominations can be blocked.

Many of your Democrat colleagues want to get around this by making DC the 51st State. This would make Eleanor Holmes Norton a fully-voting Congresswoman - expanding Pelosi's majority by one extra seat, and add two Democrat seats to the Senate. This would also give Chuck Schumer more breathing room in the Senate...

You want to know why this country is divided? Democrats understand they are going to get beat in the midterms. They know that the clock is ticking. But instead of trying to govern from the middle, these Democrats want to add DC as the 51st state to give them more breathing room.

Just think about that. Democrats' policies are so unpopular that just months after a Democrat President was inaugurated with a Democrat controlled Congress, many in the party believe the only way to pass the agenda is to add DC as the 51st state...

You're better than this, or at least you should be...

You need to kill this measure. Whether they try to turn DC into the 51st state using legislation or a constitutional amendment, you cannot allow this to pass. And when they inevitably try to do the same with Puerto Rico, you need to kill that legislation as well.

You need to work together to fix the problems facing this country, not conspire to add states to the union to make it easier to pass unpopular, one-sided legislation.

Please heed this warning: You were sent to Washington DC to serve your constituents, not to dilute their voices...

If you vote for any legislation, resolution, or amendment to add DC as the 51st state, I promise that I will not rest until you are removed from office!
