The Left demanded that Democrats defund the police and Nancy Pelosi wants to start with the Department of Homeland Security.

President Trump warned cities that if they didn't put down the riots and looting, he would order federal officers to do it for them. Most cities and states took the warning seriously. Portland, Oregon did not.

After rioters tried burning down a federal courthouse, federal law enforcement officers -- mostly from Homeland Security -- were deployed to enforce the law. Since local police were given stand down orders, the President had no choice but to deploy federal police in order to keep the building and its inhabitants safe. There are now dozens of violent rioters behind bars and facing federal charges because of President Trump's orders.

And yet, many of your colleagues would prefer that they all be set free. They would prefer that federal officers be withdrawn from Portland so the rioters can burn more of the city down.

This week, you and your colleagues will begin the process of passing the 12 appropriations bills necessary to fund the government and avoid a shutdown. One of those bills is the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act. This bill funds agencies like TSA, the Coast Guard, US Secret Service, ICE, and even Border Patrol.

Nancy Pelosi is promising to attach an amendment to defund these agencies to block them from using crowd control tactics and operating as domestic law enforcement agencies. She is promising to pull the plug on the federal response in Portland so the rioters can get back to destroying the city unimpeded. On the Senate side, Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden are introducing a similar amendment designed to defund the federal agencies on the ground in Portland.

This is insane.

You should be standing up for law enforcement and the rule of law, not scheming to find ways to hand-over the streets to these violent rioters.

I know that you think no one pays attention to what gets put in these appropriation bills. But I am writing to tell you that you're wrong...

Under no circumstance can you allow these defunding and stand-down amendments to pass.

If you vote to add any amendment designed to withdraw officers from Portland or prevent them from arresting rioters, you will be removed from office.
