GOP Now Apologizing For Helping Left Abolish Columbus Day

Leftists are demanding that the GOP rewrite the calendar to not only create a new "Juneteenth" federal holiday, but also to eliminate Columbus Day entirely.

This was a Republican proposal. GOPer Ron Johnson felt that creating Juneteenth was inevitable, so he offered a "compromise" plan to also eliminate Columbus Day, a holiday the Left has targeted for decades.

Juneteenth is not a federal holiday. It commemorates the fact that Galveston, Texas learned about the Emancipation Proclamation 1,001 days after Abraham Lincoln signed it. Juneteenth wasn't even made a Texas holiday until 1980. Prior to last month, few people had ever heard about this holiday.

And yet, there is now a push in Congress to make it a federal holiday anyway.

First of all, you need to understand how disruptive this would be. Memorial Day and Fourth of July are already federal and bank holidays. To insert another holiday in the middle would be incredibly disruptive.

But beyond that, this just simply isn't a Federal holiday. A local, Texas holiday celebrating a city learning about the Emancipation Proclamation 3 years after it was signed is not reason to create a new federal holiday.

Believe it or not, the proposal actually gets worse than that... Senators Ron Johnson and James Lankford introduced an amendment to the Juneteenth bill to remove Columbus Day from the calendar. They claim that it is necessary to balance the budget, but the fact remains that radical Leftists have been calling for Columbus Day to be removed for decades.

Frankly, I don't care what holidays people celebrate. If someone wants to observe Columbus Day or Juneteenth, I don't care. If someone wants to personally denounce these holidays, fine with me.

The problem I have is that this has nothing to do with the holidays themselves and is simply a thinly veiled attempt to appease the anti-American mob trying to tear this country apart.

Federalizing a previously-unknown Texas holiday and removing Columbus Day from the calendar is not a "compromise." It is a surrender.

You cannot appease these people. What started as a debate over Stonewall Jackson's statue three years ago has now transformed into a radical movement to tear down statues of Abraham Lincoln and even to destroy Mount Rushmore. We are on the slippery slope.

Now, Democrats are reintroducing their Juneteenth bill with the Johnson-Lankford amendment added. They are planning to push it through this coming week.

You must stop them!

But if you cave to this angry mob and try to appease them like this, I promise that I will not rest until you are removed from office...
