After the Civil War, the United States faced a tough choice: we could either punish the South or rebuild and reintegrate South into the country. Lincoln and Johnson chose reconciliation.

Confederate soldiers were pardoned. Officers and politicians within the Confederacy, however, were forced to swear a new oath to the Constitution, (and were only pardoned after a manual review of their case). War criminals were prosecuted, but practically everyone else was welcomed back into the country. Lincoln and Johnson understood that the only way to rebuild was for the country to be reunited. It has not been easy, but we continue to make real progress in this country.

I am so disturbed, however, by the growing push to reverse course and posthumously punish Americans for their roles in the Confederacy. Lincoln famously said that a house divided cannot stand. It is in that spirit of reconciliation that American military bases in the South were named after Americans who, yes, fought on the side of the Confederacy.

Fort Bragg is named after Braxton Bragg, a Confederate officer. But he was also a hero of the Mexican-American War who almost died on multiple occasions fighting for this country. Fort Hood is named after John Bell Hood, a war hero of the American campaigns in the West, but also a General in the Confederacy. He lost the use of his arm and and had to have his leg amputated during the Civil War. And yet, instead of resigning his commission, Hood had his men physically strap him to his horse so he could lead their retreat.

Neither man was perfect. No one is. But now your colleagues want for them to be punished posthumously. It doesn't matter that they were pardoned, swore an oath to the constitution, and helped rebuild the country. There is legislation making its way through Congress right now that would strip the names off of 10 American military bases, because their namesakes fought for the Confederacy. Another bill, being pushed by Nancy Pelosi, would remove any painting or statue on Capitol Hill depicting anyone who fought on the Confederate side.

What does it say about us, as a people, if we now have less empathy and courage than Americans did after fighting and winning the Civil War? What does it say about us that there is now a push to tear down monuments to Confederate war heroes, when the Union Soldiers who won the Civil War were the ones who recommended putting them up in the interest of reconciliation? It makes us look awfully small...

No one has ever been persecuted or oppressed by an inanimate object like a statue or a painting. No one has suffered because American military bases are named after officers who, in addition to serving in the United States military, also served on the Confederate side of the Civil War.

Removing these names and tearing down these monuments will do nothing to help anyone. In fact, it will cause more harm than good. We are who we are as a country because of our past, not in spite of it. Each and every scar in our collective experience tells the story of how we got here and where we are heading. Removing these monuments and renaming military bases will do nothing but embolden the perpetually offended Left. And if you give up ground in this culture war, the next fight will be over monuments dedicated to patriots like Washington, Jefferson, and Madison...

You need to kill Elizabeth Warren's Amendment to rename American military bases. You need to block Nancy Pelosi's effort to remove paintings and statues from the halls of Congress.

Voting to erase our history like this will accomplish nothing but getting yourself removed from office...
