Jerry Holliman is an American hero. He volunteered at 18 to serve in the Vietnam War and stayed in the Army for 40 years. He received Bronze Stars in both Vietnam and Iraq and was ultimately injured by a mortar explosion during the Iraq War.

When he came home, Holliman continued to sacrifice for his country. His exposure to agent orange was linked to three different cancer fights, as well as his diabetes. Last year, complications from diabetes forced doctors to amputate both of his legs.

This year, Jerry Holliman was fitted for prosthetic legs. He checked into the Veterans Home in Collins, MS to go through rehab and learn how to walk again. But two days before Christmas, the prosthetics company returned to repossess his legs. They claimed there was a paperwork issue and that he should contact the VA. When he did, the VA told him to talk to Medicare.

Neither agency was willing to help him get his legs back. He was left in a home, legless and unable to walk, just days before Christmas. Ultimately, it took public shaming to force the company to return his legs, but without the VA's help, there is no way to adjust the legs so he can walk.

This man has sacrificed so much for his country. He dedicated 40 years of his life to the US military and after he retired, he lost his legs as well. The fact that the VA was unable or unwilling to step in and help him in his time of need is disgusting.

You have done tremendous work to reform the VA to make sure that veterans in need do not fall through the cracks. But this case shows there is still work to be done.

First of all, you must pass a law to make it illegal to repossess medical equipment from veterans. No company should be allowed to take away a veteran's legs because of a paperwork issue. You have the power, right now, to put a stop to this terrible practice.

Second, you must extend VA choice to include other services, like rehab and prosthetics. If a disabled veteran needs help with their prosthetic or medical device and the VA is either unwilling or unable to assist, then the veteran must be allowed to seek private care free-of-charge, just as they would be able to under the recently passed VA Choice law.

None of this is controversial. None of this is political.

You have a chance, right now, to make a difference. You have an opportunity to ensure that no veteran is ever forced to needlessly suffer again like this.

But if you turn your back on this man... if you abandon veterans in need... then you are unfit to serve in any capacity and must be removed from office!
