Lindsey Graham's Secure and Protect Act is common sense. It targets asylum fraud at the US-Mexico border while respecting the rights of legitimate asylum seekers.

For far too long, illegal aliens have been able to game the system and use our asylum laws as a get-out-of-jail free card. They know that the minute they ask for asylum, they are guaranteed to be released into the country. When that happens, they disappear and never bother showing up for their hearings.

More than 90% of all asylum claims are rejected because the applicant flees and never shows up in court.

The whole world now knows about this loophole. That is why tens of thousands of African migrants are now making their way through South and Central America to try to take advantage of our system. The Secure and Protect Act would put a stop to this fraud.

First, it would hire 500 immigration judges to eliminate the 2-year-long court backlog.

Second, it would increase the detention time in the Flores Settlement from 20 days to 100 days. Right now, smugglers are trafficking children because the law treats children and "family units" differently. Smugglers know that if they show up at the border with a child, they are guaranteed to be released into the US within 20 days. That has led these criminals to abduct and even purchase young children to try to game the system and force their way into the country. When combined with the surge of immigration judges, this new 100-day cap would end the practice of child separation, disincentivize child trafficking, and allow US officials to fully vet asylum claims without having to release people into the country.

And most importantly, the bill would change how the US defines "credible fear of persecution" for asylum purposes. Migrants would no longer be allowed to walk across entire continents and claim that the only safe place for them is the United States. The change would require that asylum seekers apply in every safe country that they reach and only after they are rejected there would they be allowed to apply in the US. This would put a stop to the illegal alien caravans and 'forum shopping' all together.

This is a common sense solution that cracks down on asylum fraud, ends the practice of family separation, and respects the rights of legitimate asylum seekers.

You must do everything you can to put this onto President Trump's desk. That includes attaching this as an amendment to a must-pass spending bill.

Any Congressman or Senator who votes against this bill is voting for open borders. And I need you to understand that I will be voting accordingly...
