Provisions tucked deep within the 1946 Legislative Reorganization Act and the 1989 Ethics Reform Act dictate that Congress must receive automatic pay increases every year. I am demanding that you repeal these automatic pay raise provisions.

Since 2010, those raises have been frozen. Congress understood then that it was political suicide to give themselves a raise while the rest of the country was trying to claw its way out of a recession. But that decade-long freeze expires at the end of this year. Unless you vote to block these pay raises, they will automatically go back into effect. Not just next year, mind you, but every single year in the future.

I am writing to tell you today that this is unacceptable. Congress has not earned a pay raise. Not even close.

So far this year, you have gotten 29 bills signed into law. If you were doing your job, that number would be at least six-times larger... And instead of staying in DC to try to hammer out legislative compromises, Congress will spend almost 2/3 of the year at home and on vacation.

You do not deserve a raise and you certainly do not deserve a raise triggered by automatic cost of living increases.

If you believe that you cannot live on $174,000 a year -- which is three times the average American salary right now -- then you need to make that case to the American people and your constituents. You will find that there is no appetite in this country for giving Congress a raise. But, if you want to defy the voters and give yourself a raise anyway, then you must vote on the record and accept the consequences.

We the People WILL NOT allow you to hide behind laws passed in the 1940s and 1980s to give yourself a pay increase...

That is why I am demanding that co-sponsor the No Raise for Congress Act (H.R.3260) and do everything in your power to put it onto President Trump's desk. The bill would abolish the automatic pay raise system and require that Congress vote each and every time they want to give themselves a raise.

This is what the American people demand. This might actually be one of the only things that Republicans and Democrats agree on these days...

This really isn't about politics. I don't care whether you have an (R), (D), or (I) next to your name. If you allow these automatic pay raises to go into effect, you will be primaried and removed from office.

Do the right thing. Put self-interest aside and pass this bill now!
