Currently, there are more than four million people under the age of 18 who were born in this country to illegal alien parents, but automatically became U.S. citizens because of a flawed interpretation of the 14th Amendment.

The 14th Amendment was passed to ensure that freed slaves were given full citizenship. It was written to give citizenship to people born in the US as long as they were subject to U.S. jurisdiction. Over time, the "jurisdiction" clause has been ignored entirely. Everyone who is born in America gets automatic citizenship. That was never supposed to happen.

But the issue isn't just abused by illegal aliens. Every year, thousands of citizenship tourists -- often times from Asian countries -- vacation to the U.S. for the sole purpose of giving birth to an American baby. On top of that, when foreign diplomats have children in America, those babies are given citizenship as well.

A foreign diplomat has diplomatic immunity. They literally are not under the jurisdiction of the American government. And yet, they fall through the cracks.

It is time to fix this. The Birthright Citizenship Act would NOT remove citizenship from people born in this country already. But what it would do is clarify who gets citizenship in the future by defining what the phrase "subject to the jurisdiction" means.

Under Rep. King's bill, birthright citizenship would be given to any baby who is born in the U.S. and has at least one parent who is an American citizen, a lawful permanent resident, or a foreigner serving in the U.S. military. This is common sense.

You need to pass this bill. Not after the midterms, but before. If you think you can push issues like this to the back-burner until after the November election, you are sorely mistaken.
