Yesterday, President Trump signaled that he was supporting efforts to fix the FBI's gun background check system. The problem is that not all prohibited person records end up being added to the NICS system. The Fix NICS bill would solve that.

Many of your colleagues are working on helping revise the Cornyn-Murphy Fix NICS bill. The problem is that there is a similar piece of legislation that has already passed the House.

The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act passed last year. At the last minute, establishment Republicans added in the Fix NICS amendment. This bill is a compromise. In addition to fixing the background check system, it would empower licensed, law-abiding Americans to defend themselves nationwide and not just in their home states.

This is the way forward. For years, we have heard members of Congress say we need to "compromise" to pass common sense gun laws. This is that compromise.

Making sure that all the prohibited person records are added to the FBI's background check database is common sense. Giving licensed and trained Americans the power to defend themselves across the country is common sense.

We always hear talk of how Congress needs to "do something."

Pass this bill. Send the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act to Trump's desk as-written. Do not allow the bill to be split up.

This is a compromise that we all can live with, but if you allow the leadership to split this legislation up and leave American gun owners behind, there will be electoral consequences...
