Bowe Bergdahl's sentence was a disgrace. Not only will he receive no jail time, but the monetary fine is less than the backpay he is owed. What that means is that not only is Bowe Bergdahl technically owed a Prisoner of War medal, but also more than $300,000 of backpay.

Six American soldiers and a military dog named Remco died while searching for this deserter. Others, like Mark Allen, were gravely wounded. While he survived being shot in the head, Master Sergeant Allen has lost his entire standard of living.

They knew that they were trying to find a traitor and a deserter. These search parties heard over the radio that Bergdahl was actively seeking out the Taliban. Even as people were killed and wounded, they pushed on trying to bring him home.

In the past, you and your colleagues have pressured the Pentagon to correct injustices in their prosecutions and sentencing. I am calling on you to do that once again. Bergdahl's sentence would be laughable if it wasn't so disgraceful: Zero days in prison, a discharge, and a fine less than the total backpay he is owed from the Pentagon.

Bergdahl's lawyers are now demanding that their client receives the Prisoner of War medal. This medal now serves as a testament to the heroism of those forced to endure horrors at the hands of the enemy. The back of the medal reads, "For Honorable Service While A Prisoner Of War." Not only do these lawyers want to make him a hero, but they are also demanding that Bergdahl be paid the $300,000 he is owed.

Bowe Bergdahl wrote in letters home that he was ashamed to be an American and then deserted his post to search out the enemy. Now, he wants a medal and to be paid for his betrayal? This man deserves nothing.

You need to keep pressuring the Pentagon to revisit this sentence. But it is entirely within your power to make sure that Bergdahl is not rewarded for his desertion.

The Prisoner of War medal was created by an Act of Congress in the 1980s. You and your colleagues also have the power to set military pay. That means that you have the power to, in rare and exigent circumstances, intervene to make sure that traitors like Bergdahl are not honored and paid for their crimes.

I will say it again: Bowe Bergdahl deserves nothing. If you allow him to receive this commendation and back pay, I will have no choice but to assume that you think this deserter is a hero.
