After Texas Shooting, Republican Leadership Still Blocking Pro-Gun Bills

Yesterday's horrific mass shooting showed us the worst part of humanity. But it also revealed the best part of us as well.

As Devin Kelley was walking through the church and began assassinating worshippers, a good samaritan neighbor showed up with his own rifle and was able to shoot the killer. This was the only thing that stopped the massacre.

Then, the good samaritan hopped into a passing car and chased the killer into another county, where he bled to death on the side of the road. The killer was dead before the police even showed up.

There will always be evil people who figure out a way to carry out attacks. Kelley was already prohibited from owning a firearm because of his dishonorable discharge. He illegally obtained one anyway. He also was denied a carry permit by the State of Texas. Yet, he ignored the law and illegally carried his firearms anyway. The point is that this evil man ignored dozens of gun laws. Words on paper didn't stop him.

Right now, there is legislation collecting dust that would empower law abiding Americans to defend themselves and others. The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would tear down more than a century of state-level anti-gun laws and allow law-abiding Americans to defend themselves across the country.

If someone is legally permitted to carry a firearm in one state, they would be allowed to carry in every state. This is absolutely common sense. Currently, the legislation is just a handful of votes away from passing in the House of Representatives. And yet, the GOP leadership continues to stall, instead choosing to discuss a gun control bill with the Democrats.

Enough is enough. You have the power to empower millions of law-abiding Americans to defend themselves and others nationwide so that when criminals strike, there will be more good guys -- like the Sutherland Springs good samaritan -- who can defend the community before police arrive.

I want to make it abundantly clear. You cannot use this tragedy -- committed by a criminal with an illegal gun -- as an excuse to go after law abiding gun owners. Instead, you MUST immediately pass the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act and empower the good guys.

Anything less and I will not be able to support you anymore...
