Our Message for This Memorial Day

In 2015, the Obama administration fired Phoenix VA administrator Sharon Helman. Not only did she preside over a scandal that saw VA employees enriching themselves while veterans died waiting to see a doctor, but Helman personally profitted to the tune of $50k from bribes. She was convicted in a court of law of ethics violations.

This month, however, a Federal Appeals Court overturned her firing. The Judges determined that firing a VA employee convicted of accepting bribes was a violation of her rights. She is now a VA employee once again.

This is happening across the country. The Trump administration is not allowed to fire VA employees. They have too many protections.

On this Memorial Day, we honor the fallen who sacrificed everything to preserve our way of life. But we also must remember that brave men and women continue to fall and needlessly die in a corrupt VA hospital system.

Throughout history, American heroes answered the call to defend your rights. Now is the time for you to answer the call to defend theirs!

On this Memorial Day, we remember all the men and women in uniform who gave their lives so that the American experiment with democracy could live on.

But we are also reminded of the men and women who continue to die needlessly from their wounds.

I applaud the legislation you passed last week to reform the VA, but it is not enough. Allowing veterans to appeal and seek medical care elsewhere doesn't address the underlying fact that the VA is failing our veterans.

This month, a Federal Appeals Court overturned her firing and ruled that she deserved the right to appeal to the US Merit Systems Protection Board. This criminal is once again on the VA payroll. She lined her own pockets while veterans died waiting months to receive care, but even that isn't enough to fire her.

You need to cut the red tape. You need to give the Trump administration the authority to clean house at the VA.

This year, 140 names will be added to the Vietnam War Memorial. Many of these are men who died after the war from wounds they received in combat.

Memorial Day is not just about remembering the past. It is also about taking action in the present.

Our veterans deserve better than what they are getting. Again, I applaud the steps you've already taken. Last week's unanimously passed VA reform bill was an excellent start. But in order to make the VA great again, you need to give the Trump administration the power to clean house!
